Teaching in Lisbon, at Casa-Museu Anastácio Gonçalves about 19th century drawing methods. Here are some examples of drawings, made by young students that learnt Academic methods back then. This quality used to be frequent, before Academic schools were dismantled during the 20th century. It’s time to bring back this skill level. I’m teaching the Bargue Drawing Course as the first step of Academic training. More classes coming up in January.

Today was a synchronous day. After arranging the details of my next exhibition in Portugal (it’ll be in Évora), I received these beautiful photos from a friend who remembered that it had been two years since I had my exhibition ‘Painting rarefied the spirit’ at Portugal’s National Museum of Contemporary Art. Look how this little boy worked so hard beautifying our museum 😍

I taught a workshop on abstract art - textures and colour harmony with acrylics. Most students are beginners in art, and this time I also opened this workshop to children. Here are some of the works that were left to dry overnight.

I taught a 5 day Bargue Drawing Course at Kalashala-A space to create to several fine arts students, from KU - Kathmandu University and Tsering Art School. As promised, Pranay Tamang learnt the method extremely well and he is now teaching it to Tashi Phuntsho, at Karmic Ink Tattoo. Because of his artistic talent, Tashi was sent from his monastery in Buthan to study sacred Buddhist Thangka painting in Nepal at Shechen Monastery. And he’s now learning the Bargue method - classical techniques from 19th century France.
Many thanks to Graydon Parrish for having helped me setup this course. Graydon Parrish, I hope your book will become known in Nepal and very soon in Bhutan.

I gave a talk at Shanto-Mariam University of Creative Technology. This was about some connections between painting and music.
Here are some pictures of before and after the talk. I’m hoping to get a copy of the video of this lecture.

30 year old Abdulaziz told me he stumbled in the academic race.
‘Are you a Muslim???’ - his towering father asked, when he saw the very low scores at every single discipline.
‘Yes’ - little Abdulaziz replied
‘Then, how come you even failed in Koranic Studies????’ - retorted the exasperated dad.
Forget straight A's; let other children worry about these banalities. I’m led to believe he was tailored for something greater: he's the maestro of Dostoevskian drama, a kind of Shakespeare of mishaps.
The warmth of his spirit isn't just a Saudi thing; it's a global warming phenomenon.
Saudi may be his birthplace, but Africa holds the key to his heart. He grew up in a neighborhood densely populated with Somalis and Sudanese. His best friend is from Sudan. He wasn’t even remotely impressed by my long list of visited countries, because mother Africa is the great and only mother. And my travels around the world are still orphaned.
His hair and beard? Blacker than his Adidas tracksuit—because why settle for monochrome when you can have a shade darker than your clothes? His hair heard about his academic escapades and decided to out-dark them all. From all of my paintings, his favourite series are my portraits in shades of black of ‘The Exiled’.
‘I wanted to study design’ - he says while he impeccably arranges the coffee cups in his cafe.
Yet, it's not just about aesthetics; Abdulaziz's personality is a mix of contradictions and charisma.
The ignorant may label him as a student who stumbled, but in the divine corners of literature and profound thinking, he emerges victorious.
Everyday after work, he drives straight home to read dozens of books. He’s now reading three volumes of Dostoevsky.
Who needs vulgar success at a really bad noisy secondary school when you have a well used library card and a penchant for rarefied Russian literature?
So, as we sip his coffee with mastic—as complex as a Dostoevsky plot—I can't help but admire the man. Abdulaziz isn't just an eternal student; he's a major character in a comedy of errors called life, a literary connoisseur with a love for coffee, and a fashion icon even in a simple tracksuit.
Cheers to my dearest Abdulaziz!

I have a keen interest in painting traditions from other cultures and times, having specialised in old European master’s techniques (Flemish oil painting and Baroque oil techniques). Since 2005 that I teach painting classes in London for corporations like Enjoy-Work, Saatchi Gallery, Linen Hall, Grosvenor, the architecture offices KPF and Terry Farrell, Hauser & Wirth gallery, etc. I teach occasional lessons at the Victoria & Albert Museum (South Kensington) about 19th century drawing techniques, and team building workshops for several companies including KPMG, UBS Bank, Sainsbury’s, Bank of America Merrill Lynch, Discovery, Paramount, UNICEF, etc.
