🇺🇸 Happy Veterans Day! To celebrate, I wanted to share the story of my great-grandfather Herbert “Herb” Seibel, seen in the first photo with his sister.
He was born in Manitowoc, Wisconsin in 1922. I don’t know much about his prewar life, but one can assume he went to school and worked around Manitowoc before his enlistment in 1942/43.
When he joined the Army he was assigned to the 10th Mountain Division and shipped out for training at Camp Hale, Colorado. It was there that he would marry my great grandmother, Gladys, before deploying to Italy in January 1945.
As a member of the 604th Field Artillery Battalion, he was likely part of a crew that served a 75mm pack howitzer providing fire support for infantry units. During his time with the 10th Mountain, they took part in brutal fighting over now iconic battlefields like Riva Ridge and the Apennine Mountains.
He never talked much about his wartime service, being the stereotypical quiet and hardworking WWII veteran after he returned home from Italy. Postwar he went on to work at the Manitowoc Engineering Company until retiring in 1975. Unfortunately he passed in 1991, before I had the opportunity to meet him.
My great grandmother and his wife Gladys lived until 2020, but both of their memories continue on in their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
Happy Veterans Day! 🇺🇸
