Are you struggling to navigate chord changes on bass? You’re not alone!

As a seasoned bass player and instructor, I’ve identified three common reasons why many bassists struggle to hear and play through chord changes:

Reason 1: Lack of Ear Training
You can’t play what you can’t hear. Developing your ears is crucial for recognizing chord changes.
Reason 2: Inadequate Chord Progression Understanding
Not grasping the harmonic structure of songs makes it tough to anticipate chord changes.
Reason 3: Insufficient Practice with Real Music

Theory is essential, but knowing how to apply it to real songs and music is where the real growth happens.
Now, let’s tackle these challenges with practical solutions:
Solutions:

Ear Training Exercises: Spend 10-15 minutes daily listening to gospel and/or Christian songs, focusing on the chord changes. Try to sing or hum the bass line. (Choose song difficulty levels based on your level as a player... Beginner, intermediate, etc...)Chord Progression Breakdowns: Study common gospel chord progressions (e.g., 2-5-1, 1-4-5). Analyze songs and identify patterns.
Play-Along Sessions: Practice with gospel backing tracks or loops. Start with slower tempos and gradually increase speed.

*Here's one of my Gospel Backing Track Instructional courses that I recommended.

Additional Tips:
Listen to gospel bassists like Andrew Gouche, Maurice Fitzgerald, or Joel Smith.

Learn to recognize chord tones (3rd, 7th, etc.) and use them as landmarks. (i.e. using the numbers, we know that the number system goes 1,2,3,4,5,6,7 back to 1 right? So most chords are built with the 1 3 and 5. learn what that sounds like. Now start introducing the 7. On bass it can be spelled 1 3 7...)Experiment with improvisation(playing solos) to develop your own voice.

Do Good & Play Better: A Limited-Time Offer

Hey YouTube Family,

There's a good friend of mine who you may know, Nate Holleman.

Nate has been undergoing some very serious health challenges for some years now. Most people wouldn't know, because he's not the complaining or sympathy-seeking type of guy. Nate has always worked very hard and never really asked for much of anything from those who know him. However, he's always giving to those around him.

Here's 1 example: Recently my recording interface stopped working and I posted about it on Facebook asking for recommendations. To my surprise, my friend Nate just gave me one that he already had. This is just one of countless times that he's looked out for the needs of others...

Unfortunately, due to these serious health challenges, Nate has been unable to work. We all can imagine how tough that can be with bills and hospital visits.

I’m writing to you today with a unique opportunity to support Nate while also upgrading your own bass skills. As a community, we can make a difference in his life.

For a limited time, 50% of all profits from my online store will go directly to supporting Nate. This includes all bass courses and instructional videos, such as:

Hymns and Spiritual Songs Instructional Package
Riffs and Licks Vol 1 and Vol2
All Bass Jam Instructional Packages
The Ultimate Bass Bundle
All Gospel Bass Bundle
And more...
When you purchase any of these resources, you’ll not only be improving your own playing but also contributing to Nate’s well-being.

Visit my store now and browse the resources

Your support will bring hope and relief to Nate during this challenging season. Let’s come together as a bass community to make a difference!

If you'd like to provide additional support via cashapp you can give to: $NateHolleman

Thank you for considering this opportunity to support Nate and upgrade your bass skills.

BTW, Nate didn't ask me to do this, nor did he know anything about this. This is just my attempt as a friend and brother to help.

Gospel Music Without a Gospel Heart: 5 Dangers of Playing in the Dark

As I mature more as a musician and in my own Christian walk, I notice something with many gospel/Christian musicians...

Many don't seem to have a personal relationship with God, nor do they seem interested... That honestly bothers me...

So here are five tips on the downfalls of playing gospel music without understanding the gospel:

1. Lack of authenticity: Playing gospel music without understanding its roots and meaning can lead to a superficial performance, lacking the passion and conviction that comes from a deep connection to the music.

2. Misinterpretation of lyrics: Without understanding the gospel message, you may misinterpret or misunderstand the lyrics, leading to an inaccurate representation of the song’s intended meaning.

3. Disconnection from God and the audience: Gospel music is deeply personal and relational. Without a genuine understanding of the gospel, you may struggle to connect with your audience and even God on a meaningful level.

4. Inability to improvise or express: Gospel music often involves improvisation and expression. Without a deep understanding of the gospel, you may feel limited in your ability to express yourself authentically.

5. Risk of cultural appropriation: Playing gospel music without understanding its cultural and historical context can lead to cultural appropriation, disrespecting the traditions and community that birthed the music.

Here are five recommendations for better understanding the gospel and playing gospel music:

1. Study the Bible and gospel teachings: Immerse yourself in the scriptures and teachings that underpin gospel music. This will help you understand the lyrics, themes, and emotions behind the songs. It's more authentic when you believe in the God that you’re singing or playing about.

2. Attend church services and events: Experience the vibrant worship and community that birthed gospel music. This will give you a deeper connection to the culture and emotions that drive the genre.
Listen to and learn from gospel legends:

3. Study the music of pioneers like The Pilgrum Jubilees, The Clark Sisters, Andraé Crouch, Thomas Whitfield, and others. Analyze their techniques, phrasing, and expression.

4. Collaborate with seasoned gospel musicians: Working with experienced gospel players will help you learn nuances, traditions, and performance practices that can’t be taught in a classroom.

5. Pray and seek spiritual guidance: Gospel music is deeply rooted in faith. Seek a personal connection with Jesus, and ask for his guidance on your musical journey. This will help you play with purpose, passion, and authenticity.

Matthew 7:7 “Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. 8 For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.

Remember, understanding the gospel and playing gospel music is a lifelong journey. This is the good news of Jesus Christ. Be humble, open-minded, and willing to learn, and you’ll become a more authentic and compelling gospel musician.
