From the badminton community, our heartfelt thanks. 😅🏸
Jokes aside, please remember that while trick shots are fun - they should be reserved for when you become an advanced (or even a pro) player.
As a beginner, please resist the urge to do a lot of trick shots. Keep in mind that basic shots win rallies, not fancy shots.

Be the right badminton beginner, please. 🤣🏸
Jokes aside, remember that what you focus on as a badminton beginner will determine how quickly you'll become an intermediate (or advanced) player.
If you're a badminton beginner for 2 years or longer, you need the right guidance (not just 'more time' or 'practice').

The Broadway Harry Potter musical was amazing. 🎈🎉
As an ambitious badminton player, remember to take time off now and then.
Yep, go out. Enjoy yourself.
Don't burn yourself to the ground trying to get better at the sport. Instead, take some time off to help your body recover...
... and help your brain re-evaluate your training choices.
Sometimes you can't see the forest for the trees. You're so bogged down with daily training that you can't see the big picture.
Allowing your brain to think about different things often helps you see more areas to improve in your badminton game.

You win in badminton not by "winning more points" but by making fewer mistakes.
• Analyse your last game.
• Determine how often you've lost a point because of a mistake of yours.
Do you see a pattern?
If you're like most badminton players, 80-90% of your lost points are due to your own mistakes.
Not obvious "unforced errors", where you hit the net, for example - but choosing the wrong shot that set yourself up for a lost point.
So remember...
... we often think that we win points.
But even at the highest level of badminton, points are lost - not won. So, focus on making fewer mistakes.
You make fewer mistakes by dialing in your fundamentals.

Yes... I said it. 🫣🏸
Self-training will only get you so far. At one point, Youtube videos or group training are simply not sufficient anymore to help you level up your game.
At this stage, you need:
• A clear step-by-step program by a person that is better than you.
• Regular feedback to improve good habits (and remove bad habits).
• Accountability to help you do what you should do.
The sooner you can realize this, the better you'll be as a player (and the less time you'll waste).

Haha, noooo 🤣🏸
If you're struggling to go from the beginner to intermediate stage, you're likely not focusing on the fundamentals enough.
The 3 fundamentals are:
1. 4 badminton grips (when to use them, how to transition effectively)
2. Footwork
3. Consistent shots/ shot selection
You can focus on more fancy moves, like the jump smash, later on.

This may sound counterintuitive, but I'll say it anyway: Losing is okay in badminton.
Sometimes, you'll just play against a player that is better than you.
• A player that wants it more.
• A player that is more experienced.
• Or simply a player that is more talented than you.
What is not okay, if you're at all serious about badminton, is not playing to your full abilities.
• Calling it quits after losing the first point.
• Letting nervousness get the better of you.
• Seeing the shuttles fly past you, with no motivation to act.
It's those losses that gnaw at your confidence and your love for the sport.
So one crucial thing my coach taught me, is to adopt the mentality of a fighter.
• Never quit, never surrender.
• Fighting for every point, even if you are 10 or even 15 points behind.
Even if you lose, your opponent and the spectators will give you their highest respect.
And at the end of the day, when you're on your way home, you know you've given it your absolute best.

"Sorry guys, now I'll stop." 😅🏸
Jokes aside, while a flick serve is effective - it's often not the most fun thing to receive in a club setting.
That's why I've added a "4 key serves" guide to my Badminton Secrets eBook. It gives you 3 alternatives to the flick serve to make sure that you adhere to club etiquette. 😅
You can check it out in the link in my bio. 💯
