This past week I've been taking a closer look at the most fundamental form in American Penmanship: the oval.
My first step was to draw the oval as perfect as possible. I quickly had a realization as I was failing to draw it properly that the oval does not touch the base or top lines on the slant line. This is something that I figured out years ago, but had somehow forgotten.
I think my misconception was actually affecting the way I made my ovals with movement as I was subconsciously trying to distort them so the oval touches the lines on the axis of the slant line.
Things like this might seem trivial, but they aren't, especially when you are dealing with a form that is fundamental to the entire script. It's hard enough to make these forms and it's impossible when you have an inaccurate conception of the form in your mind.
My plan is to work the oval drill in both directions and see what else I can figure out to really tighten this form up. This is all in preparation for me to start studying Ornamental Penmanship, but we'll see how it goes.

You might have saw I recently published a ton of videos (35 to be exact). These videos are part of a free course I put together called, âConsistent Cursiveâ. Itâs a basic course that covers simple, traditional cursive forms (no arm movement/Palmer Method).
You can watch the course on YouTube here: www.youtube.com/playlist?list...
And learn more at consistentcursive.com/.

I encourage you to read this article titled, "The Line of Direction in Writing" by Zaner in the Volume 20 of Penman's Art Journal, page 115: archive.org/stream/penmansartjourna20unse#page/114⌠(link goes directly to the article, which starts on the right page).
In the article, Zaner discusses how the angle of the page relative to the forearm affects writing and gives his opinion on the optimal position.
While this isn't the most genius insight, it's something that I'm guessing most penman never consciously consider and I've never seen this included in any of the penmanship manuals. The more I read from Zaner, the more I understand why him and his company were the leaders of penmanship education.
I hope your study is going well. Why not send me a letter? I'll write back with a critique - perfectbiscuits.com/write
Sincerely,
Dave

Does this video contain footage of a golden age penman?
The Met recently posted this 1928 silent film that shows the âbehind the scenesâ of the museumâs operations. Iâd like to call your attention to the 15:15 mark of the video. Here the video mentions the print shop where hand hand lettering is done. It then shows a few seconds of an employee painting a sign and then scribing a label for one of the art pieces. Itâs hard to tell if he is using a brush or a pen, therefore we canât be certain if this guy considered himself a sign painter, engrosser/penman, or both. Unfortunately this portion of the video is quite short, but it could be the only footage (as far as Iâm aware) of a golden age pen artist.
I was made aware of this video and the penmanship footage contained within it by the amazing artist âŞ@JamesGurneyâŹ.

Whatâs up guys,
Iâm about due for another video and I have a few ideas. Let me know what youâd like to see next!
A) another abstract, conceptual topic where I talk in the camera, probably about practice and figuring out what to practice OR getting nervous when you write.
B) a technical video of me writing, working on a something specific like the o-s connection, connective strokes in general, or something else youâd like to see.
C) something completely different that you think I could shed some light on.
Thanks for subscribing and watching.
