🚀 NASA: Asteroid Impact Risk Nearly Doubles! 🌍☄️
The odds of an asteroid striking Earth in the next decade have nearly doubled, according to NASA. 🌎💥
Discovered just after Christmas, Asteroid 2024 YR4 is on a path that could bring it dangerously close to Earth in December 2032. 🗓️🛸 When first detected, NASA estimated a 1.3% chance of impact—now, that probability has risen to 2.1%. 📈😨
🔭 Why the Concern?
A 2% chance of impact is considered "uncommon" by NASA experts. 🚨
The asteroid follows a highly elongated orbit, taking it near Earth before heading far out between Mars and Jupiter. 🌌🪐
Due to its orbit, it will disappear from view in April and remain hidden until 2028. ⏳👀
🛰️ NASA’s Plan:
NASA will use the James Webb Space Telescope 🔭 to refine the asteroid's orbit and study its infrared emissions to determine its true size. Estimates suggest 2024 YR4 is between 130 and 330 feet in diameter—large enough to cause localized devastation if it hits a populated area. 🌆💀
