FYI folks that the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA), acting on new directives, has recently updated its grant opportunities, cancelling a program called "Challenge America" which supported arts from/for underserved communities. It is instead encouraging organizations and individuals to apply for America-250, which is a program designed to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. There are also changes to the legal requirements and compliance policies for grant recipients, relating to DEI programs and gender ideology. This will likely impact presses we talk about on this channel, many of which receive funding from the NEA...or receive funding from other organizations supported by NEA grants.

Consider supporting presses you love through donations, shopping directly from their website, checking out their books from the library, and/or sharing their great work through social media.

WOW I've never seen this kind of weather watch for Chicago. We get a LOT of gusty weather (though every Chicagoan will be quick to tell you that our Windy City nickname has nothing to do with our windy weather!!!). But I am guessing this new "Fire Weather Watch" has something to do with what's happened in LA? I've never seen it before!

Hi all! Join my Discord community (link below) if you'd like to discuss books longlisted on the small press focused literary award, the Republic of Consciousness Prize! It is a low pressure group - no need to actually read any of the books to join the discussion. We talk about lots of books from small presses, not just the ones on the prize list!

Books from nonprofit and independent publishers.
I love books from small presses, and I've spent the last few years reading as much as I can from them.
Small publishers are often less profit driven than large publishers. Meaning they can take more literary risks. They can publish voices outside the mainstream. They often have a mission, a vision, a vibe. Some focus on the natural world, or excel at speculative fiction. Some publish only poetry or translated literature. Some are committed to social justice and radical change. The list goes on.
I want to share my love for these books and publishers, but most of all I want to help match you to your perfect publisher, who consistently puts out the kind of books that catch YOUR eye. There’s so much to explore. Welcome!
♥
Sarah
P.S. I do not accept any free copies for review at this time.
