Finished MechWarrior 5: Clans - I thought it was fantastic.

Going to be releasing a full playthrough on the channel over the next 5-6 days. My gameplay might not be the greatest, but I tried to provide as much additional context and background information to events unfolding onscreen as I could, which I hope will make it an interesting watch.

I would like to create a couple of videos discussing certain aspects of the game in depth. I might start with a more traditional review, going through which parts I liked and what needed improvement. Or I could compile all the little lore titbits I brought up during my playthrough and create a longer video akin to the trailer breakdown I did.

But the one facet I'd love to focus on above all else is the characters. I found them to be incredibly compelling; definitely one of the best Clan perspectives we've had in the series. Smoke Jaguar could have so easily been portrayed as absurd caricatures, but somehow the game manages to balance making them grounded enough that I completely bought them as real people, while still including all the "sillier" details and mannerisms that set them apart.

I found it fascinating seeing how these characters, who are 100% convinced it is their manifest destiny to spread the ways of the Clans and bring freedom to the Inner Sphere, grapple with the reality that the people they are trying to save are resisting them with every fibre of their being. And against that wider backdrop, there is real personal tragedy for the protagonists. People change for the worse in this game, and I feel like that's a real rarity in the medium.

I am absolutely loving MechWarrior 5: Clans.

I just wrapped up the "Lethal Heritage" part of the game. Leading up to release I was worried that it might end there and leave many disappointed, but now it feels like I'm barely half way through. I gave Luthien 50/50 and Tukayyid less than 10% chance of appearing, but it may very well cover all of Operation REVIVAL.

Piranha Games has done a remarkable job of showing accurate Clan culture as well. It really feels like a fleshed out universe. I'm doing my best to explain all the little lore details as I'm playing through it, and getting giddy with excitement when I get to talk about things like Hegira and Surkai.

The characters behave in a way that feels very much like you would expect of Smoke Jaguar without making them seem like moustache-twirling villains. The warped lens they view the world through is both fascinating and completely alien. And somewhere along the line I went from being indifferent to the squad and their banter, to being equally as invested as anyone from the Blood of Kerensky or Jade Phoenix trilogies, maybe more so.

It's not without it's flaws (some of the mission design is a bit dated and the environments themselves look underwhelming), but as I think I said in that initial trailer reaction, it's clear that a lot of love has gone into it. Can't wait to play more tomorrow.

Apologies to anyone who has been trying to get hold of me on YT. I've been deliberately avoiding the website so as to avoid spoilers. I'm glad that I did because the story has really developed in ways I wasn't expecting.

Take care everyone.

Hello everyone,

Hope you are all having a great week. I'm enjoying the last night of my holiday before heading back to sunny Scotland tomorrow. Back to work on BattleTech Lore & History soon.

As you're all no doubt aware, the latest installment of Tex Talks BattleTech is about to debut over at  @theblackpantslegion . The Battle of Twycross has been a labour of love that they've been slaving away at for the past year, and they're about to cross the finish line.

As ever, the BPL is making the most of this opportunity to do some good, raising money for the American Cancer Society. Whether you are in a position to donate or not, you can help support the cause just by being there.

I have no doubt that it'll be a fantastic production. Very much looking forward to seeing it. No matter the times, we can all find joy in Clanner scum falling victim to their own hubris.

Take care.

Heya folks, channel update.

We're back in business with the Third Succession War. Happy to see so many of you there for the premiere yesterday. I'm about 70% done with the next chapter, so I'm hopeful I can finish it before I head away on holiday this weekend.

Quick question for anyone who picked up a copy of Shrapnel #18. I've heard that it includes a Terran Alliance era short story. If so, is there anything in it that contradicts my own recent mini-series? I'd want to make corrections before uploading the finished compilation. Would seem a shame to have that instantly out of date the second it releases.

Lastly, just want to give a shout-out to another BattleTech channel: youtube.com/@WargamerStories

I've found myself binge watching their entire campaign these past few days. Production value is as good as anything I've seen and the way the narrative has unfolded has been spectacular. So much more than just a slugging match. You've got daring raids behind enemy lines, battles happening completely by accident, both sides completely misinterpreting the others' objectives, masterful ruses and some that backfire, and so much more. Can't recommend them enough.

Cheers guys

Hey everyone. Just a reminder that the Terran Alliance finale is premiering in 48 hours. It's around 25 minutes long. Hope you guys enjoy it.

Compilation video should be out later in September. Thank you to those people who pointed me towards other bits of lore on this era that I had missed. I'll edit them in before publishing. Likewise, thank you very much to those four individuals who volunteered their time to condense the TRO dates for me. Was a great help in integrating those into the Third Succession War scripts.

On an unrelated note, anyone want to hit me up on Duolingo? Just taking my first tentative steps in learning Dutch, something I've wanted to do for a few years. If so, you should be able to find me if you search for SvenVanDerPlank.

Cheers

Hello everyone, hope you are all well.

I'd like to ask for your help today with the upcoming Third Succession War series. A few people have offered their time in the past so I thought I'd organise something more structured.

If you own a copy of either TRO3025 (the original, NOT the revised version) or TRO3026 and would like to help, then read on.

To help me keep track of the conflicts I cover, I organise every battle I come across in the sourcebooks into a table. This way I can make sure that I include everything when writing the scripts. Unfortunately, there are so many sources for the 3rdSW that I simply don't have the time to read through everything again. For reference, there were over 600+ entries in the 2ndSW table, and that was from far fewer sources.

Here's where you come in. If you'd like to do some data mining for me, between us we can condense all that info far quicker. Many hands make light work and all that.

Linked below is a Google Doc with a pair of tables. In the first table, I've divided up each TRO into sections. Pick one that doesn't already have someone's username allocated to it and add a comment with your name. I'll do my best to keep it updated as those come in. The second table gives examples of what kind of info I'm looking for and in what format. In most cases, the TRO probably won't give you all of that information, but that's okay, just add some ??? for anything unknown. Unfortunately, I won't be able to make the main table editable because it'll invite griefers, but if you want to link me to your own afterwards, I can copy and paste from there.

Thank you in advance to anyone who can volunteer their time. I hope to get the next chapter of the Third Succession War out on September 14th. Cheers folks.

After six years of faithful service, my first PC (affectionally known as the Enthoopoo) is getting a bit long in the tooth. Never built it with the kind of video editing I do now in mind; poor thing has spent many nights (sometimes multiple uninterrupted days) at 100% CPU usage rendering in 4K. I wonder what tiny percentage of my audience even watches at that resolution...

So this is my project for August. Still waiting on the CPU fan but then I'm ready to go*. I didn't really have the funds at the moment to build one (was going to put it off another year), but my friend recently upgraded his own GPU and very kindly donated their old 3070 for which I'm extremely grateful. It's saved me several hundred quid and made buying the rest of the components viable. Still a significant step up on the 1060 6GB I'm rocking currently.

Few questions for anyone knowledgeable about these things:
Is an 850W PSU appropriate? Could downsize to a 750 or increase to 1000 if necessary.
Amazon listing said motherboard supports 14th Gen Intel, but box says 13th. I think I need to return that, but is it actually okay? Has anything fundamentally changed?

Thank you for all of your support over the past years, and to my Patrons who have so generously donated to help make video production a larger part of my life. Cheers folks.
