John 1:17 (ESV) For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.

Thank you Jesus! You ARE ā€œGRACE and TRUTH!ā€

Titus 2:11-15 (ESV) 11 For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation for all people, 12 training us to renounce ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives in the present age, 13 waiting for our blessed hope, the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ, 14 who gave himself for us to redeem us from all lawlessness and to purify for himself a people for his own possession who are zealous for good works. 15 Declare these things; exhort and rebuke with all authority. Let no one disregard you.

Philippians 1:9-11 (ESV) 9 And it is my prayer that your love may abound more and more, with knowledge and all discernment, 10 so that you may approve what is excellent, and so be pure and blameless for the day of Christ, 11 filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God.

The spiritual man will be misunderstood.

John 17:14-21 (ESV) 14 I have given them your word, and the world has hated them because they are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. 15 I do not ask that you take them out of the world, but that you keep them from the evil one. 16 They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. 17 Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth. 18 As you sent me into the world, so I have sent them into the world. 19 And for their sake I consecrate myself, that they also may be sanctified in truth. 20 ā€œI do not ask for these only, but also for those who will believe in me through their word, 21 that they may all be one, just as you, Father, are in me, and I in you, that they also may be in us, so that the world may believe that you have sent me.

Scripture displays how severely misunderstood our Savior was. Can you imagine being the Son of God, coming to earth amongst the peoples youā€™ve created, to teach them and show them the way and they mock you? Call you a blasphemer? Accuse you of having a devil (the very thing He came to destroy)? Make fun of you? Spit on you? Eventually kill you? And no, these werenā€™t just the pagans or outsiders, these were His own people acting ā€œin the name of God.ā€ These were probably some of his own childhood friends. Even at points His own family.

John 7:5 (ESV) For not even his brothers believed in him.

However, this was always the plan. That even while they were still sinners He would humble Himself and die for all of humankind. Jesus did not respond to His critics in His flesh. He didnā€™t lose his temper and lash out at them. He didnā€™t do a supernatural work to ā€œput them in their place,ā€ such as calling fire down from heaven to those who didnā€™t believe as some of the disciples suggested (Luke 9:51-56). No, He contended with the Word. He continued to put on display what it looked like to perfectly walk in the Spirit. To perfectly walk in meekness, and love. This is the model.

The scoffers did not deter Him from the mission. He only did and said what the Father told Him. Full submission. Full obedience. He truly looked to obey an audience of One. Jesus declared to His followers many times the cost of discipleship. He wanted them to make informed decisions about this journey they would embark on, should they choose. In Luke 14 and Matthew 10, Jesus tells us the cost of such discipleship. There is a price. As He would lay down His life, we would also lay down ours. Jesus attracted great crowds when there were signs and miracles, but itā€™s when He started dealing with the heart that the people departed. He told the crowds, ā€œIt is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh is no help at all. The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life. 64 But there are some of you who do not believe.ā€ (For Jesus knew from the beginning who those were who did not believe, and who it was who would betray him.) John 6:63-64.

When like Jesus, we choose to ā€œwalk in the Spirit,ā€ we will also be misunderstood. We will also be scoffed at, mocked, slandered, reviled, overlooked, disregarded, and dismissed. You fill in the blank, ā€œbecause as He is, so are we in this worldā€ (1 John 4:17). We as Christians are the representatives of Christ on earth. Ambassadors, whom God is making His appeal to the world through us (2 Corinthians 5:20). If Christ suffered in the flesh, so will we.

Iā€™d like to continue this thought by exploring 1 Corinthians 2, which shows us how the natural man cannot understand the way of the Spirit. They cannot understand things which can only be spiritually discerned. Romans 8 and Galatians 5 also encourage us to ā€œkeep in step with the Spirit,ā€ which is always our aim as Godā€™s children.

We are in this world, but this world doesnā€™t understand us and that is expected. My hope is to equip you and encourage you in this Christian life. This world has desperate need of the revelation of Jesus Christ we all share. We cannot give up, and we must not lose hope. The Lord is with us, walking with us, like the wonderful Father that He is. ā€œFor I, the LORD your God, hold your right hand; it is I who say to you, ā€œFear not, I am the one who helps you.ā€ Isaiah 41:13. What a beautiful picture.

We will continue tonight (Thursday) at 6:30pm on the live stream. I hope you will come and be encouraged by what the Lord is doing in His people.

Ephesians 3:14-19 (ESV) 14 For this reason I bow my knees before the Father, 15 from whom every family in heaven and on earth is named, 16 that according to the riches of his glory he may grant you to be strengthened with power through his Spirit in your inner being, 17 so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith--that you, being rooted and grounded in love, 18 may have strength to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, 19 and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.
