A shot is being discussed in detail a day before the shoot with the actors and cinematographer.
Certain climate was needed to shoot a couple of scenes in the film. And this is something which we wanted to shoot during foggy weather which was not at all in our control. So in pre production, we planned the shoot considering a possibility of such climate. The climate was assessed for couple of days and we observed the timing when we could get the substantial amount of fog in the scene. It was also observed that the weather would change within 5 minutes of span with heavy winds. So the risk was, if the weather changes and we couldnโt complete all the shots then we canโt use any of the shot because of the continuity jerk.
But we decided to take a chance. Because of the uncertain climate and limited time, we couldn't afford any mistake during the shoot. So, one day before the shoot, everything was discussed and planned in detail with the actors and cinematographer.
The location was somewhere in middle of a top of the hill. So we even had some markings to reach the exact spot of the location. But on the day of the shoot, a team which was carrying all the equipments had lost their path. They couldnโt even find the markings in the fog. Even the internet connection was very bad and we were running out of time.
Then we did not have any other option than screaming and shouting, so they could gauge the direction of the voices.
Finally after almost 1 hour they reached at the location and we stared the shoot.
Thankfully the climate did not change until we completed the shoot.
We were blessed to have nature's support throughout. ๐๐ป

Itโs been exactly one year now since we started working on this project. And finally, we are happy to present you all our last short film in the series โ๐ฌ๐ผ๐ด๐ฎ๐๐ฎ๐ป๐ฎ๐โ. The film will be released ๐ฎ๐ ๐ณ ๐ฃ๐ ๐๐ฆ๐ง on our YouTube channel '๐ฌ๐ผ๐ด๐ฎ๐๐ฎ๐ป๐ถ'.
This entire process was quite enriching and painful at the same time for me... A pain of a different kind.... May be of a kind, when a mother delivers a child... But when she delivers a child, it happens perfectly... Nature doesnโt make any mistake.
Iโm never perfect... No matter how much I strive.
A lot of work was needed for making this film and we did not have any facilities, support or manpower to fulfill those requirements.
But, I would like to thank & congratulate each and every member of my team. Everyone of them threw themselves absolutely in extremely challenging situations to make it happen. Without this dedication it was impossible to complete the film with such limited resources.
If you like any aspect of the film, credit goes to them. And if you feel that some aspect is not upto the mark then it is my responsibility...

After the shoot was completed I got busy in something and I had a minimum idea of what was happening in post production.
But now when I watched the film, I must say, to know the real essence of this film it's best if you approach it in a certain way. May be sit in a dark room in total silence and watch it till the end on a big screen if possible, with best sound quality.
Ever since I witnessed the process of filmmaking, I realized what all it takes to make a film and every individual has to put so much effort for that. Only if we approach it properly then we can perceive the film in a best way, which will be an appreciation to their work. ๐๐ป

Weโd completed rest of the scenes & just a last day remained for the shoot & yet we couldnโt find anyone. Subodh was firm that if we donโt get the proper person for the Guru, then we wouldnโt release the film, even if we complete the shoot. Because, certain authenticity was needed to the character to represent a spiritual master, otherwise it would have been an insult of such beings.โ

Then finally, at the very last moment, we received a picture of Surendra Tiwari ji who was a priest in some temple. Immediately after the shoot we met him and explained the situation. He was totally busy with his daily routine & not at all interested for this. But after a lot of convincing, finally he agreed to come just for a couple of hours.โ
โ
He didnโt have any experience of acting & we didnโt get any time to train him. So eventually, when he came for the shoot, he became totally nervous as expected. He couldnโt utter a single line & got completely uncomfortable. He was on the verge of giving up, and we knew that if we canโt complete it now, then itโs very difficult to complete it later. That was the most crucial time of the shoot & every second was very important as we had only 2 hours left for the last day & we had to shoot at 2 different locations which were quite far. โ

It looked almost impossible to get the performance we wanted in that limited time. That was a real test to manage that situation.
But he was handled very carefully & smartly. Many tricks and skills were used, to make him comfortable & get the performance out of him. โ

And finally, he delivered...โ

Which came out as if he was a skilled artist!โ

Our Guru really tested us, before giving his best shots! ๐

Searching the Guruโ:

The main criteria for choosing this character for Surya Kriya film was, to find someone who is already on the spiritual path who would be comfortable to act, and not to get some actor to play the spiritual master. The main reason for this was the presence of the Guru was more important than his acting skills.โโ
โโ
There were many Sadhus who stayed back in Nashik after the Kumbh in 2015. So, to find our character, Subodh visited almost every Ashram in the city and met many Sadhus. Some of them were smoking Marijuana, which was completely visible in their eyes. Some claimed to have supernatural powers. There was someone who was treating people with herbs. When he was asked about his source of knowledge, he said that he simply knows from within & then gets the herbs from the forest.
But then he was seen buying these herbs from a herbal medical shop nearby. โโ
โโ
There was a person, with a big set up in his room, pretending to have all the solutions. But, when he was asked some simple questions, he got totally confused & after a while he started sharing his own problems & insecurities. โโ
โโ
So, there was a big disappointment that we couldnโt find our character in any of them. โโ
โโ
But, there were few ascetics who were involved in some intense Sadhana & certain glow was clearly visible on their face. But, they refused to act in our film because they were in a certain discipline. โโ
โโ
After a long search, finally we found someone who was close to our requirements. He liked our concept & agreed to support us, then we started the rehearsal. But when we went for the shoot, he had to go on certain Sadhana in which he said, he canโt cross the river in his area.
This was totally unexpected & all our schedule collapsed. We couldnโt postpone the shoot for many reasons, therefore once again we had to find some other character for this role. We started shooting rest of the scenes & at the same time we were trying hard to reach out all our contacts to find this character. We were getting pictures but none of them were close to the requirement. โโ

Searching the Guru for the film became a real test for us, just like in real life.๐

Real incident which was used in the Surya Kriya short film:
In 2013-14, Subodh was roaming around with one of his close friend on the Mumbai streets. His friend was struggling with some financial issues, so he was little tensed. Looking for some way out. And then suddenly he saw Rs 500 note lying on the road. He picked it up. There was some relief on his face that now he could sustain at least for couple of days.
Then he looked around. There was a beggar. He thought something for a moment & approached him, gave the note to the beggar and turned back. The beggar couldnโt believe that someone is giving him Rs 500, so he started checking whether it is genuine or not.
The friend came with a smile & said, โMy situation is not worst than him. He needs it more than me.โ
The incident was so inspiring that we used it almost 5-6 years later in the Surya Kriya film. To shoot this, we wanted the original character, so our team had to ride few kilometres to find one. When they found someone & asked him about it, he simply got up & started walking with them without uttering a word, as if he did not have any choice of his own. Our team made him sit on the bike. For the very first time, they were sitting so close to a person like this. He might have not taken a bath for long time & there was a certain unbearable smell around his body. Usually people avoid touching a person like him. But our people held him carefully so he'd not fall from the bike.
Filmmaking always demands to break the limitations, accept the reality & embrace the people of all kind.
He followed the instructions & gave all the shots. After the shoot, we gave him Rs.500, and suddenly a big smile appeared on his blank face ! He couldnโt believe that he earned 500 rupees in just 20 minutes. We were enjoying the joy on his face. All our actors were supporting us as a volunteer & none of them were paid. He became the only paid actor in the film!
We wish if we could capture that amazing smile to share with you all. But, its best to experience that in real.
Why donโt you try the same when you come across a person like him next time?
Just surprise him.

Story behind the casting of our second next short film 'Surya Kriya' :
In September 2018, we had conducted a Hatha Yoga Program in Nashik. After the completion of program one of the participant Shoaib, who was completely touched by overall experience, invited Subodh to his place to have โSheer Khurmaโ, a special recipe made on the occasion of Eid. There he met Shoaibโs father, a very gentle human being. He is an Osho Sannyasi. He shared his amazing spiritual journey and the difficulties he faced, especially when people of his community misunderstood yoga as some religious activity.
During the early stage of his spiritual journey in 1991-92, when the wave of religious riots was hitting everywhere, some people asked him to take part into it, to support his community. And he simply refused the act of violence. When those people started instigating him, he simply said, โWhen I have already experienced something profound within me, your words are not going to affect me.โ
Subodh observed the same longing for spirituality in Shoaib. In spite of having extreme financial challenges and social unacceptance, to such an extent that sometimes he had stay out of his home, but yet he never compromised on his Sadhana. This was the exact quality Subodh was looking for a character in our next film. He started observing Shoaib very closely and requested him if he can support us to find the locations in Nashik.
One day, according to brief given to him, Shoaib was showing a location to Subodh through a video call. When Subodh was asking any questions to Shoaib, he would get some humorous replies from somewhere out of the frame. Subodh asked him, โWho is there?โ Shoaib replied, thinking Subodh might have felt offended, โPlease ignore him. He is my friend, Kumar. I came here with him to see the location.โ Hearing his sense of humor, Subodh replied, โI canโt ignore him. Please ask him, if he can play a character in our next film? And yes, youโre also playing one character in it. We will start the preparation when I come to Nashik next time.โ
Thankfully Kumar agreed to support us.
