Anthony “Tony Sheik” Carillo was a caporegime in the Genovese crime family, known for his close ties to underboss Michele “Mike” Miranda. Born in Naples, Italy, in 1902, Carillo immigrated to the United States around 1920 and quickly became entrenched in organized crime alongside his brother Salvatore.
Rising through the ranks from soldier to captain, he eventually succeeded Generoso DelDucca after his death in 1960, becoming Miranda’s primary conduit for communication.
Carillo was heavily involved in gambling, robbery, bribery, and assault, with his crew maintaining control over the East New York and Brownsville Brooklyn territories he co-managed with mob associate Jake Columbo. He remained a powerful and respected capo until his death in August 1974.

Federal investigators uncovered alleged ties between John DiGilio, the Genovese waterfront boss and secretary-treasurer of ILA Local 1588, and members of the Bayonne Police Department. According to a 1980s FBI affidavit, these connections enabled DiGilio to operate with “a significantly diminished risk of detection.”
The affidavit named Bayonne Public Safety Director James Sisk, Deputy Chief Thomas Lavin, and Detective Peter Dugan as recipients of bribes or protectors of DiGilio’s interests.
These relationships were reportedly used to tip off DiGilio about law enforcement activity or suppress investigations into his criminal operations. The scandal was part of a broader probe into organized crime’s infiltration of waterfront unions and city government, eventually contributing to major federal racketeering cases against the Genovese crime family.
DiGilio was acquitted in a 1988 RICO trial where he acted as his own attorney. Weeks later, his body was found in a New Jersey canal.
