When I first started as an Imagery Analyst (96D/35G) in the Army, we used this system called the "Tactical Exploitation System" or TES.

The TES was a massive multi hundred million dollar configuration of equipment - from mobile SATCOM Antennae, dirty green tough boxes with Sun Microsystems computers running "State of the Art" Imagery Analysis and intelligence software, and of course, continuously and meticulously inspected vehicles to lug it all around in.

After all these years I don't precisely remember all of the intelligence products we produced or what the exact results where of the work we did in Iraq in 2005, such is life in intelligence, but I do remember this...

That system was a lunk of coal and completely useless without the people that made it work!

The analysts that knew which buttons to press (and it wasn't at all intuitive), the SATCOM experts that knew how to get link and keep our data flowing, the mechanics that kept our vehicles running, the entire team of people that lugged those boxes around every day, inspected the vehicles ad nauseam, and cleaned the tents out more times than anyone would think is reasonably necessary!

Today the TES could fit in your pocket, but you would still be many leagues short of the capabilities of the team that made it all work!

I hope you get a chance to checkout this episode with Vice Admiral (Ret.) Robert "Bob" Sharp! As former Director of the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency, he has some really good insight into whats happening today in the Intelligence Community and where the future of the IC is headed. I've read a lot of the comments, the IC has some major public trust issues that need to be solved and I think you'll find Bob is one of the good guys!
