Can't believe it has been almost a year since we completed the renovation of our former Akiya (Vacant House) in the countryside of Japan. I am working on a one year review video. I hope you all enjoy and learn from our process. In the meanwhile, please enjoy these beautiful pictures around our house in the countryside. Thanks!
I feel so fortunate living in the countryside of Japan. We purchased an Akiya in August 2022. We performed an extensive renovation and continue working on the grounds. I must admit we are very proud of all the accomplishments thus far. Please consider following our journey if you interested in living in Japan as a foreigner. Thanks!
Awesome time at the Japan Camping Car Show 2024 in Chiba. Way too many to see in one day. Stay tuned for the video!
Hello everyone! I finally got around to finishing a video covering the cost of our Akiya renovation in the countryside of Japan. I tried covering other areas such as how I found it, financing, lessons learned. Hopefully it is beneficial and thanks for watching!

Hi folks thanks for watching and following. I am very humbled anyone would want to watch the content I started at a whim. Since I started my channel, I have met many cool subscribers and fellow YouTubers such as @RealRuralJapan and @TokyoLlama even though I don’t consider myself a YouTuber. However, I am THIS close to 1000 subscribers! Again, thank you very much! I am working on a six-month progress video of our empty (Akiya) renovation in rural Japan. I love the Japanese countryside and looking forward to continue working on the house, Japanese garden and the grounds. In the meanwhile, below are some more recent pictures of what is to come. THANKS!
On our way to the Minka Summit 2023 in Aichi Prefectural Citizens Forest in Shinshiro. Please see additional information below. I will try to edit video of the event and upload as soon as possible. This channel documenting our Empty House (Akiya) renovation launched in November 2022 with the simple desire to share our experimece and possibly encourage others to consider giving an Akiya, traditional Japanese house, minka (peoples house) also known as a kominka a second chance.
My personal goal is to reach 1000 subscribers by the end of this event. As I type this post I am honored and humbled to have 897 subscribers. Much more than I ever expected! Thanks for the support!

Welcome to our channel, where we share our journey of restoring a traditional Japanese minka, which we bought as a cheap abandoned house in the countryside of Japan. Join us as we breathe new life into this former akiya, exploring the beauty of traditional architecture and the challenges of renovating a house in Japan. As foreigners living in Japan, we've embraced the opportunity to restore this minka, a symbol of Japan's rich cultural heritage. Learn about the craftsmanship involved in minka construction, from bamboo and earth to straw, and discover how these materials create a harmonious living space. Our journey began with purchasing this akiya for 5 million yen (approximately $35,000 USD), including not just the minka but also a guest house, storage building, and a generous plot of land with trees. We'll share tips and insights into the challenges and rewards of renovating a traditional Japanese house in the countryside, showcasing the unique blend of history and modern living.
