If we go back just a few verses, Paul gives us some context: "So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. For the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. They are in conflict with each other, so that you are not to do whatever you want."
Keeping in step with the Spirit means what Jesus said in Luke 9:23: "Then he said to the crowd, “If any of you wants to be my follower, you must give up your own way, take up your cross daily, and follow me."
