After a quick trip to Ireland, I am now on my way to Hamburg, Germany for the Studioszene conference with ‪@theselfrecordingband‬ team! We will be doing some live episodes and workshops, as well as maybe a sneaky pint meetup! Hope to see some familiar faces there, come say hi!

Had a big explosion of views on my recent video about The God Particle and interviewing Jaycen Joshua on The Self-Recording Band Podcast - and it made me wonder, do YOU - my lovely viewers - like plugin focused review and first impression videos, tutorials, or business focused videos the most? Or, do you like all of the above and appreciate the mix?!

PS - appreciate the support everyone. This has been a lot of fun for me!

Todays video is all about changing your track heights in Pro Tools to get things looking exactly how you want, and making sure you can see what you need at any given moment! Being able to do this quickly is actually pretty important to being fluent with Pro Tools and navigating your session quickly, so I cover a few different ways you can do this in the video!

This is a shot of the studio I interned and came up at: The Woodshop Recording Studio on Vancouver Island, BC, Canada. That D-Command board was fantastic, I honestly prefer it over the new Avid/Pro Tools S6 mixers (which I admit look much more sleek). Missing tracking in that room!

I used to have long hair in my band days!

This is a snap from when my band, Band of Rascals, was recording at the legendary Warehouse Studios in Vancouver, BC, with Eric Ratz as our Producer. It was an amazing studio, and an amazing experience! I learnt so much in those two weeks. We worked dusk till dawn and no detail was overlooked. If you're into guitars, it was heaven - but that's another story for another time!

The key takeaway that I'm reflecting on now, though, is that everything can be a learning opportunity. In this case we had hired one of the worlds best studios (and engineers, Zach, Ryan and Annie - you all rule!), and best rock producers around - to take recording off our plate as much as possible - BUT, I still watched every single step of this process like a hawk. I asked questions, I experimented, and I learnt. I came out of this album as twice the engineer I went into it as, even though I was technically just a musician for those two weeks of tracking.

Hands on experience is very valuable! Take advantage of it when you can!

This weeks video is coming a little later as I'm currently out working on a fun Documentary! It's coming though! Until then, go rewatch that video that you said you'd try, but never did!

Repetition is the key to progress folks!

What's the first mixing tool you reach for when mixing a gritty rock vocal sound?

Rock Vocal Mixing = Saturation & Slap Back Delay. Plus some magic. In the case of my latest video (go watch it!) Korneff Audio's Echoleffe plugin is the magic!

Im a little off schedule lately as I’ve been on a (nearly) month long honeymoon with my beautiful wife around Italy! Thought I should post to say that I’ll be home in a week and can’t wait to start filming some more videos. Feeling inspired.

PS - I just finished doing sound on The Amazing Race Canada just before this trip and had a BLAST. Thought I should maybe talk about that side of my work on here - let me know if that interests you!

Anyways, enjoy life - I sure am! See you all soon!
