As a registered nurse and person with type 1 diabetes, I have experienced firsthand the gaps in chronic disease management. It is my belief that just knowing how to manage a disease is not enough. It requires new coping skills to adhere to a new, healthier lifestyle. It starts with understanding that your purpose is not your malfunctioning body. Next step is to recognize that your life has value and meaning. Finally, to deal with the emotions you will feel living with chronic issues. This doesn’t just happen, but requires intentional awareness, healthy new perspectives, and a means to find your intrinsic motivation. My mission is to make sure psychosocial skills, in addition to disease education, become standard of care for diabetes and other chronic diseases. Because no one is good at something they hate.
