You can paint with acrylics under oils but it’s a good idea to wait at least 3 days for thin layers of acrylic and 2-3 weeks for thicker layers of acrylic. Why? Because acrylic paint takes longer to dry than it appears. Other suggestions: lightly wipe the acrylic layer with distilled water on a lint-free cloth to remove surfactant build-up and let it dry again before oil painting, and if your acrylic paint is glossy, lightly scuff it with fine sandpaper to allow the oil paint to have better adhesion.

George O’Hanlon is fantastically knowledgeable about all aspects of oil painting. Follow @RublevColours for more in-depth videos. #oilpainting watch video on watch page

This is the best video I've seen regarding the "fat over lean" concept. It's not just about adding more medium (or less solvent) with each layer. The bottom line: paint in thin layers with as little medium as possible. At 23:30 he says, "Paint with thick paint thinly. What that means is use paint out of the tube and apply it in thin layers. That's the safest way to work with paint overall." #fatoverlean watch video on watch page
