India looking to build two additional ports in Bangladesh and Sri Lanka*.
India is expanding its maritime presence by developing new ports in Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, according to Minister for Ports, Shipping, and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal. Indian Ports Global Limited (IPGL) will soon develop Mongla Port, Bangladesh’s second-largest port, and is considering terminal projects at Kankesanturai near Jaffna, Sri Lanka. A new ferry service between Nagapattinam, Tamil Nadu, and Kankesanturai is already operational.
These projects follow previous expansions at Chabahar in Iran and Sitwe in Myanmar, reinforcing India’s goal to become a global maritime leader. Additionally, a ₹76,220-crore mega port at Vadhavan, Maharashtra, has been approved, expected to generate 1.2 million jobs, with another port planned at Galathea Bay, Andaman & Nicobar Islands, through a ₹44,000-crore PPP model.
In green energy, 3,900 acres at Kandla and Tuticorin ports are earmarked for a hydrogen hub, projected to attract ₹5 trillion in investments. Jawaharlal Nehru Port is set to reach a container handling capacity of 10 million TEUs by 2027, and the first port-based agro-processing zone will also be established there. Progress is also being made in shipbuilding, with new facilities planned across several coastal states.

FedEx, UPS Warn of Delivery Delays From Global Tech Outage.
FedEx Corp. and UPS Inc. warned of potential delays in package deliveries as the couriers grapple with the impact of a massive IT failure that is upending markets and crippling companies around the globe.
FedEx is seeing “substantial disruptions throughout our networks” due to the third-party issues, it said in a statement on its website. The company is implementing contingency plans but said delays are likely for parcels scheduled for delivery July 19.
Some of UPS’s computer systems are being affected and it is also looking at work-arounds to minimize interruptions, the company said in a separate statement. Its planes continue to operate and drivers are still on the road, UPS said.

In 2024, India* is witnessing significant investment inflows, particularly in well-established industries such as advanced manufacturing and healthcare, as reported by ANI, a partner of TV BRICS. Investors are showing a strong preference for proven business models with potential for sustained growth, according to industry sources. A substantial portion of the investments, approximately 75%, has been channeled into sectors like advanced manufacturing and healthcare during 2023, highlighting their resilience and expanding market presence.
India's healthcare sector continues to attract substantial funding, especially for specialized and niche hospitals. Furthermore, considerable investments are anticipated in pharmaceuticals and medical technology throughout 2024. The sustained investor interest in established companies with a history of long-term and sustainable growth has bolstered traditional sectors. Notably, investments exceeding US$1 billion have been allocated to five major initiatives within this sector.

India* continues to maintain its leadership in ship recycling, outperforming other regions despite their challenges. With less than two weeks until the expected election results, ship recyclers in India are seeing a steady flow of business and prices are stabilizing. GMS, the world's largest cash buyer of scrapped ships, is optimistic about the growth of Alang’s recycling shipyard and anticipates a "recovery period." The company also believes that a possible victory for Narendra Modi would provide a boost to domestic recyclers and the overall economy. 🚢
In contrast, other regions are experiencing less favorable conditions. The Bangladeshi taka continues to weaken, with potential impacts on foreign exchange reserves and steel plate prices remaining stagnant. ⚓
The situation in Pakistan is similarly challenging, with recyclers in Gadani losing bids and facing a lack of recent arrivals at the local waterfront. ⛴️
Despite these challenges, the Turkish lira has remained relatively stable against the U.S. dollar, and interest rates have also held steady. However, buyers in Aliaga are actively seeking tonnage. 🇹🇷
Indicative prices demonstrate that Bangladesh leads in container prices at $560 per ton, tankers at $540, and bulk carriers at $520. Indian recyclers are close behind, with Pakistani recyclers in third place. The indicative prices of the three ship types in Turkey may be around US$380, US$370, and US$360 respectively. 🌍
