Hey good people! Batavia here! Summer harvests are starting to trickle in (things really pick up in August and September in my garden). But it's already time to start getting geared up for Fall plantings..
*My avg 1st frost date here in Chicago, IL is Nov 1st so I use that as a guide for Fall plantings..
*While many cool weather crops will still be in the garden after Nov 1st, growth will slow significantly based on our weather conditions.. (Don't forget to add at least 2 weeks to the expected harvest time when planting for Fall.)

* ME: Hey Siri, how many days are there between now and Nov 1st?
* SIRI: 96 days
(thinking..I need more time.....)
*ME: How many weeks are there between now and Nov 1st?
*SIRI: 13 weeks and 5 days
......Somehow 14 weeks seems like much longer than 96 days..which gives me GREAT CONFIDENCE as I ready things for a Fall garden! ๐๐

Happy June 1st from my Chicago garden! I was able to pick the first garlic scapes of the season and volunteer marvel of four seasons lettuce before the rain came๐ happy gardening! ~ B

๐ Do y'all remember those sweet potatoes slips we moved from water to soil a couple of weeks ago (check out my Shorts)? Well they are doing great!
๐ TIP: Potting the slips in soil, isn't required but it will give my plants a head start in our shortish season ๐).
๐ I am forever enamored as I watch plants go through the growth stages... this little guy is going to produce sweet potatoes.. sweet po-ta-toes! So very cool!
๐ Well, I've continued to move more slips from the sweet potatoes to water to soil.
๐ Come June we'll be ready to plant!

PO-TA-TOES! Hey good people, Batavia here! I was so pleased with the potatoes I grew using a version of the Ruth Stout method last year, I mimicked it in the sister bed in the front yard garden!
๐ฅ๐ฅTIP: At the initial planting, add a couple inches of mulch and then water, add a couple more inches and water, repeat.
๐ฅPic 1 Added compost (I also added compost last fall when I put the garden to bed).
๐ฅPic 2 Added granular fertilizer and bone meal
๐ฅPic 3 Added 8 Red LaSoda and Purple Viking potatoes from last years harvest spacing them *about* 10 in a part (generally, 10-12 in is recommended).
๐ฅPic 4 Added about 6 inches of straw (Ruth Stout used spoiled hay)

Hey good people! Batavia here from B Betta Garden! I am an URBAN GARDNER GROWING a TON in the middle of a BIG CITY!
2024 is the 17th growing season in Zone 6, Chicago, IL, USA. My *average* last frost date is Apr 17th and my *average* first frost date is Nov 1st. My Front yard garden & Backyard garden include 16 raised beds (different sizes and material) + dozens of containers! It is my hope that by sharing my garden with you, you can see what's possible for you and your family through gardening.
