Independence Day has a very deep meaning for me as an Indian. The word comes steeped with emotions, attached to the blood & sweat of thousands of Indians who gave up everything & many a times their life so that we could live in a country free from the fetters of servitude.
Our beautiful country & all these people who ushered in a free & Independent India would have never envisaged that we would live in shackles of subjugation even after decades of Independence.
I, as an Indian woman, today am hesitant to even utter the words Happy Independence Day. Yes, Independence is very precious to all of us, we celebrate the people who gave us a free and brilliant country, but in a country whose National Song begins with ode to the Motherland, a country which is addressed as a mother, what have we done, gone & torn the women of this country into tatters & still continue to do so.
Who is to blame? Me & all of us who have not taught our sons, brothers, fathers, uncles, nephews, bosses & friends to develop a sense of respect for every woman, no matter with what relationship or no relationship they come to your life.
Why do we discuss this only when a precious life is lost this heinously ? Why can’t this be an ongoing discussion followed by action to bring an end to this ever prevailing evil.
Our motherland bleeds today as she holds the limp, violated frayed body in her arms. This is the saddest darkest hour & we will have to turn around, hand in hand rise above every other manacle & do our bit so that the happiness which comes with celebrating this momentous day is real.

It was a busy kitchen today. The morning kept me occupied & before I realized it was almost time to fire up lunch. Into the kitchen I went with Kumudu & Christopher. Lunch had to be on the table in the next 1hour 30minutes. So first who was making what. I would make The Bengali Style Prawn curry with Ridge-gourd & Potatoes (the largest bowl in the Picture above). It’s a beautiful curry filled with layers of flavor infused from the base ingredients without adding much spices. Also there is a lavish coconut base which is perfumed with garam masala bringing everything together.
Going anti-clockwise in the picture, the next dish I made is lal shaag / amaranth leaves mish mash. A simple rustic dish which was tempered with paanch phoron (the quintessential Bengali whole spice mix of Nigella seeds, fenugreek seeds, cumin seeds, mustard seeds & fennel seeds) & a whole bulb of garlic 🧄. To give it a special touch, I add tiny cubbed fried eggplant 🍆 & onions along with fried bori (dried lentil dumpling) & freshly grated coconut.
Now we have recently discovered Christopher’s hidden talent as the creator of the most delicious vegetable peel stir fries. So going anti-clockwise in the picture you can see that today he dished out a tasty ridge gourd (Walakolu) peel & cauliflower (Mal Gowa) stem thel dala (stir fry). I will share the recipe of this dish soon & I bet you will never throw away your vegetable peels after this.
Kumudu would be making going anti clockwise second from bottom in the picture, Mal Gowa Mallum or Cauliflower cooked in Sri Lankan style. The recipe reel is already in my feed.
Finally Kumudu made Dhal Curry in Sri Lankan Style & it is so finger licking good. Next time she cooks Dhal (Red Lentil)Curry, I will capture & make a reel for the recipe.
It was busy in the kitchen from the word go. There was Geethika (Religious Song devoted to Lord Jesus Christ) playing as we went about doing our own bit quickly with an occasional joke or conversation from us breaking the kitchen sounds.
All said & done, it was time for the Lunchtime meal to be savoured by Mr. S & family. Without any competition Christopher’s dish was the declared the clear winner.
