#humanswhotrek "Everest continues to excite and inspire me."
Some anecdotes come to light to inspire generations. This is Lhakpa Sherpa's nail-biting anecdote, who challenged many societal notions and summited Mt. Everest 10 times.
Her life started in a village more than 4,000 m above sea level in the Makalu region East Nepal. Being a member of the Sherpa ethnic group, who descended from nomadic Tibetans, she is used to harsh conditions. But climbing Everest was not an easy feat; it was a journey from my childhood. “I faced many challenges. Sometimes, I had to walk to school while carrying my brother. There was no electricity in the village. Villagers doubted women's capabilities. And my parents never supported me because they thought I would become masculine and undesirable, and no one would marry me.”
Unlike the predictions, she aced everything and was also happily married to a US-based Romanian climber, George Dijmarescu, and scaled the peak five times with him. Their relationship ended later, but she continues to live in the US with her two daughters and a son.
According to her mountaineering was "not rewarding compared to the risks involved," but it helped her escape the mundane. "Past 8,000 m, I feel like a zombie. We can not eat anything, and everything is frozen. We have to start climbing at night to start descending during daylight. It's scary."
But mountains make her happy and relaxed. She aims to scale Mount K2. Its treacherous slopes, rugged topography, and poor weather conditions make it the toughest mountain. But Lhakpa is a change that can mould mountains. We are peeping into the future for you to win, Lhakpa.
