"Most students of church history know that the Church produced the Bible and protected it against heretical interpretations at ecumenical councils like Nicaea. So while the divine Word guided the Church as it protected the Bible, the Bible was a 'creature' of the Church-not the other way around. This is implied in Paul's declaration in 1 Tim. 3:15 that the Church is 'the pillar and foundation of the truth.' Because the Church birthed Scripture and is its foundation, it makes sense that only in the Church and its accumulated wisdom can Scripture be rightly interpreted" (Gerald R. McDermott, Deep Anglicanism, p. 245).
It is pastorally irresponsible to teach people that salvation cannot be forfeited. Not only does this make "true Christians" an entirely invisible and unknown reality, offering assurance to absolutely no one, it also creates a conflict between grace and man's will, suggesting that grace actually overrules the will of man. God is a respecter of persons, and while he does enable our wills to receive his salvation, he also allows us the ability to reject it—a horrific reality called apostasy. To teach that apostasy isn't possible and that those who fall away were never of the faith to begin with is the epitome of spiritual and pastoral neglect. We must not be afraid to use the language of Holy Scripture.
