Possibly the hardest video I’ve ever made…
I’ve recently completed my first six months as a Samaritans listening volunteer.
Today, I want to share some reflections and explain why I decided to take on this role in the first place.
Firstly, the topic of suicide is close to my heart. Back in 2015, I lost a close family member this way and witnessed firsthand the devastating impact it can have on those left behind.
Secondly, in this ever-connected world, we can all be guilty of getting caught up in what we need to do, achieve, or obtain next.
In all that noise, it’s easy to lose sight of what truly matters.
Rarely do we pause to ask ourselves what we’re genuinely grateful for.
Volunteering has given me a space to slow down, be present, and offer my time and empathy to those in pain.
In doing so, it’s also helped me keep my own life in perspective.
Thirdly, when I’m not making videos, I travel across the UK, working with business leaders, managers, and employees, encouraging more supportive conversations about mental health in the workplace.
As rewarding as that work is, I’m conscious that I don’t belong to a traditional workplace myself. Volunteering gives me a space to practice what I preach.
It’s been an emotional rollercoaster; Often, I’ve seen and heard reflections of my own life in the words of the people I speak to and i’m reminded that when supporting others, people have to choose for themselves.
Our role as mental health advocates is to blend intention and skill. To help people reflect, organise, and take control of their path forward, based on the choices they have available.
In this Thursday’s video, I’ll be sharing some of the key lessons I’ve learned over the past six months, including:
The language of needs
The real impact of psychosis
And the risks of unchecked unconscious bias

Proud to support @PepsiCo delivering workshops that help their managers have more accessible conversations about mental health and raise awareness of the impact of suicide in the workplace.
This would not have been possible without the organisational skills and passion of the dynamic HR duo that is Priyanka Parmar and Justyna Stanke 📸
Not to mention the reach and support from the UK's number one Employee Assistance Provider @HAWisdomWellbeing 👌🏾🔥

In 2023 there were 7063 deaths by suicide in the UK representing an 8.6% increase on the previous year...
World Suicide Prevention day is observed on the 10th of September and aims to reduce stigma while raising public awareness of the fact that death by suicide is preventable.
The triennial theme for years 2024 - 2026 is about changing the narrative on suicide.
In this video I talk about the prevalence of suicide in the UK, alongside some of the misconceptions that prevent us from updating our view of the subject.

The health benefits of voluntarily approaching stress in the workplace 🙂
The Biopsychosocial Model of Challenge and Threat was published in the Journal of Neuroscience and Biobehavioral Reviews back in 2011
It provides us with a visual representation of the different physiological pathways our body uses to mobilise energy reserves when faced with a motivated performance or ‘stressful’ situation.
When we perceive a motivated performance situation as a challenge (high resources + low demand) the body uses hormones such as norepinephrine and adrenaline to prepare us to engage with the task.
We also have a higher Cardiac Output and lower Total Peripheral Resistance (the resistance of all of the blood vessels in the body)
The opposite is true when we perceive a motivated performance situation as a threat (low resources + high demand)
We have a lower Cardiac Output and higher Total Peripheral Resistance.
In addition, under the ‘Threat’ pathway the body also uses cortisol to mobilise energy.
Which is significant as it has a much longer half-life and stays in the body for hours rather than a few minutes (like norepinephrine)
Higher levels of Cortisol combined with higher net constriction of the arterial system over an extended period of time can result in negative health outcomes for the individual (Allostatic Load)
Including poor task performance, less emotional stability, higher levels of anxiety, a weaker immune function and eventually burnout 🤯
These cardiovascular responses to challenge or threat serve as indirect measures of our underlying psychological states when faced with a stressful situation.
In the workplace you might describe this as the difference between resilience and vulnerability.

Pronounced (poo-rah vee-duh) 'Pura Vida' literally translates from Spanish to English as 'pure life' and is commonly used as a greeting by locals in what is known as one of the happiest countries in the world.
It's also a euphemism that has come to symbolise the simple, cheerful, outlook and culture of Costa Rica 🇨🇷🦥
Appreciating life's simplest pleasures, finding joy in the little things and accepting events we cannot change.
A great way to stay centered in mind, body and spirit alongside reducing stress and avoiding burnout 😌👌🏾
Having visited recently I can tell you this mindset really is infectious (Tarantulas, Wild Dogs and Mosquitos aside) 👀
My question is how can we use it to the benefit and improvement of our workplace culture; How do you and your teams stay Pura Vida?
