Today it is exactly 20 years ago since I spawned my first Betta pair on March 11th 2003 (see picture below). This was the start of my “Betta Territory”! What started with a few small aquariums in my student room quickly expanded to a custom build shed especially for my Bettas. My experience with breeding show budgerigars and my background in biology & research proved to be very useful here.
When I started, the hobby in my country was very small with no breeders participating in shows in Europe, nor where there any Betta-related events organized within the Netherlands. In 2004 I participated at my first show in Germany where I got to know many other hobbyists, learned more about these beautiful fish, purchased some quality fish and gained my first training in order to become a judge.
As I personally believe that there is no room for secrets in this hobby I wanted to share my knowledge and experiences with other hobbyists. By now, various articles and videos can be found on breeding and genetics can be found on my personal website (www.bettaterritory.nl/) and my YouTube channel (youtube.com/Bettaterritory).
On my personal website you can also find detailed spawn-logs of all the spawns (300+) which have been performed in my “Betta Territory” since that first spawn back in 2003 (www.bettaterritory.nl/BT-Spawns.htm).
In addition, the Bettas4all forum (2004), and later the Bettas4all Facebook group (2013), were created in order to bring Betta hobbyists together from all over the world to share knowledge and experience with respect to the keeping, breeding and showing of (show) bettas.
Other important highlights for me have been the first Bettas4all show in the Netherlands (2006), the development of the Bettas4all Standard© (2010) and the immense succes of the Holland Betta Show (since 2010) and our stand at Vivarium (since 2011).
Off course it has not always been easy. This hobby asks a lot of time and dedication and this is not always easy to combine with family life and work. In the past 20 years I have seen many promising hobbyists come and go and also have experienced several ups-and-downs in my fishroom and within the Betta-scene and it is important to realise that this is also a crucial part of this hobby.
Through the years I have met some amazing people who I am happy to call my friends and I am looking forward to meet many more in the future.
I would like to thank you all for your support 🙏. The past 20 year have been an absolutely amazing journey and I hope to continue this for many more years ❤️!

Proud to see that the paper 'The genetic architecture of phenotypic diversity in the Betta fish (Betta splendens)' is now published in Science Advances!

THE HOLLAND BETTA SHOW IS BACK!!
The 12th edition of the Holland Betta Show will be held during the 30th edition of the Holland Koi Show in the beautiful Castle Gardens of Arcen, the Netherlands.
At the Holland Betta Show ~300 show Bettas of different color and finnage varieties will be shown. All fish are self-bred by European hobbyists and will be judged on vitality, color, finnage, bodyshape and overall appearance by a team of experienced judges according to the Bettas4all Standard© to determine the winners of the various showclasses and the special prices.
