Low pressure will form today. Chances of this becoming subtropical or tropical have climbed to 50%.

Current max winds in red. Oil platforms are taking a beating. These winds are from elevated positions (think high rise level - NOLA folks).

Wind shear is increasing so Francine appears to be finished strengthening. Whether it gets classified as Cat 1 or 2 is kind of trivial - it's about borderline now. The wind shear has actually allowed the storm to grow so a bigger area will receive storm impacts. I've circled the area that could receive wind gusts to hurricane force and is likeliest to lose electricity this afternoon and tonight. 11 AM CDT radar.

I'll talk about the other four areas later today in another video. The area in red is likely to become a tropical depression later today. The area in yellow off the SE Coast has some time but could be a subtropical or tropical storm for the Carolinas/Mid-Atlantic in 4-5 days.

Hurricane hunters are still seeing strengthening and now it's possible we have a Category 2 hurricane based on the recent flight level winds measured in the eastern quadrant.

I'm going to put out a video early in the 8 a.m. eastern (7 a.m. central) hour discussing Francine's final approach. If there are any major changes this afternoon, I may do a second video after work. Hang tight!

Hurricane Francine continues to strengthen. Winds are 90 mph and we will probably have a Category 2 hurricane late this morning and this afternoon, with landfall between 3-6 p.m. in southeast Louisiana. The radar shows a mostly closed eyewall but also some wind shear affecting the southwest part of the storm.

Francine looks to be starting an intensification period as expected. Some dry air got into the core this morning, which is why that intensification was paused. Aircraft are en route to confirm.

The eastward nudge continues. This puts metro New Orleans in the right front quadrant and potentially the eyewall, though that can still change. It also means the River Parishes and maybe Baton Rouge get hit hard.
