A lot of you guys had strong opinions on this week's AI talk: https://youtu.be/mW_LGGapxto
While many agree with my optimistic view, and the call to adapt and use the technology instead of fighting a pointless fight, the vocal majority in the comments is focused on making sure AI models get regulated to prevent them from learning artists' pieces without their consent. I didn't touch that subject much in the video since I'm not a lawyer, and also - I don't see the point.

To begin with, yeah, it's always a good idea to let people decide what's being done with their IP. But it doesn't seem to be possible to enforce this: you guys know many AI tools are available as open source, to download and teach by anyone, right? You can block a website or ten, but how do you know any new piece out there isn't made with the use of personally-taught AI model? Especially if it's used by an artist that could paint on top of the result.

The second problem here is that even if regulation somehow actually works, it won't stop AI at all: there's plenty of free-to-use classical pieces out there under Creative Commons license. Combine that with CC0 photography, and you can generate pretty much anything you want. Completely legal and with clear conscience.

The third reason to not waste time on the meaningless fight is the fact that AI grows so fast. How many years will it take till some new model will be able to generate actual unique art based ONLY on photo and video or reality? Using the same object-oriented meaning-searching method human beings use.

So let me know what you guys think about this. I think we all have to change, whether we like it or not. Spending hours on polishing a bunch of details on a canvas is soon to be over. Professionally. Personally and spiritually, it's not going anywhere, of course.

Hey everyone! Hope you've had a great start of the academic year. Or, if you're old, I hope you've had grapefruit.

Writing this to let you guys know I'm on a small break from YT that is almost over, so expect new vids in a week or so. It's been an insane month full of complex 3D animation and compositing in Blender - Nadia and I have been working on a video commission involving all kinds of skills, which was awesome. Anyway, that's over and I'm coming back to my own stuff very soon!

Attached are some studies of cats I did yesterday in a cat café. That is all.

Yooo "One Ticket To Elsewhere, Please", a new and trippy album by Kevin Focke is out! I made this cover art for it, and you guys can see some stages of the process while listening to the album in this video: https://youtu.be/F1eIv8yvAXE

The process was a wild ride of improvisation and surrealistic allegorism. That's why things changed in the weirdest way. It was a very fun cover to work on.

Some of you guys suggested I make the face of the First Witness a little bit less like a generic grandpa, and a little bit more like a face worn by something else. I'm enjoying it!

Sculpting with the Cloth brush in Blender seems like such a hack - but it's actually surprisingly hard to really use it in a productive way. I think I found a few cool tricks though. Decided yet again to completely rebuild the shirt with proper topology - it just makes things so much cleaner to work with
