It’s the longest (and proudest) video I’ve edited so far so please give it a watch if interested!

We are in the process of building a woodworking studio in Yamanashi, Japan, which we hope becomes an international hub for woodworking, crafts and the culture of wood.

Once the woodworking studio opens next Spring, there will be various classes on fine furniture making, traditional Japanese woodworking, sustainable forest management, green woodworking and experiences for children (including classes in English as well).

We hope to create a space where people from around the world can gather and the cultures, knowledge and love for wood and crafts can be freely exchanged.

Currently, the timber frame assembly is complete (you can watch the assembly process in my previous video), and we are working on the exterior walls and the roof.

However, the construction costs of this project have risen unexpectedly due to the rising price of materials and other unforeseeable circumstances.

Inevitably, there is a need for financial assistance to aid us in completing this woodworking studio and we have therefore launched a Kickstarter campaign.

Please do take a look at the Kickstarter campaign, contribute and share about the project. Thank you!

New video coming soon...

I was asked if I could repair a damaged post with a Kanawa Tsugi (scarf joint).

Not wanting the post to directly touch the ground like how it was previously, the client picked a stone from their garden.

Marking out the height and joinery, adjusting the slanted post, cutting the joinery, and scribing onto the stone.

There were several aspects of the work in which I only had a little or almost no experience so the work took longer than I hoped, but thankfully the overall process went smoothly and I managed to finish everything within the day, with a result just as I imagined (or perhaps even better).

Most of all, the client was delighted with it and I hope it makes their house feel a touch more special.

Happy Holidays!

Thank you all for 100k subs!
I’m pleasantly surprised and delighted so many of you enjoy my videos.

I currently have one video in the works which I hope to release before the end of this year. Attached is a little preview of that. This was joinery we found when we were taking apart a century-old traditional house. Being fascinated such elaborate joinery was left by the craftsmen of the past, I had been wanting to attempt it from the moment I saw it.

Next year, I have a few projects in mind which I hope you guys will enjoy!

Also next spring/summer, we will be raising a Japanese traditional style timber frame structure which will become a big workshop. A workshop for woodworking enthusiasts from all over the world to gather, share skills and cultures, learn and interact with the wood and forest. I will post more details in the near future. I hope to share more videos from the work site too.

Wishing you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Last year, I received a challenge from ‪@DorianBracht‬ challenging ‪@mitchwoodwork‬ and myself to a "100% wood challenge".

The rules:
- 100% wood (of course no nails or glue)
- Make a "Katsuobushi Kezuriki" (dried skipjack tuna shaver)
- It has to work...

To make it more interesting, I was away from my workshop, had only several basic hand tools, barely any wood and had to work outside the house.

But it was also an opportunity to try out joineries I've been wanting to try and experiment with working on smaller items. While the build did take some time, I feel the video editing took even more time (500+ GB of footage).

Anyways, I'm happy to be finally releasing the video soon, in the next few days together with ‪@mitchwoodwork‬

Stay tuned and happy weekends!

明けましておめでとうございます!
Happy New Year!

In case you've missed it, here's the video on the work I've been up to.
I'm currently in Saitama, Japan, working and learning with other carpenters.
We are currently in the process of taking apart a traditional house for it to be relocated.

From tomorrow, we'll start work on taking down the roof tiles, then the actual timber frame structure.
I'll be documenting as much as I can about that process too.

Wishing you all a great new year!

For the last two weeks, I've been working as a carpenter, with other traditional carpenters and fine furniture makers to relocate a traditional Minka house (built 92 years ago) in Saitama, Japan.

The house will be relocated to Kawaguchi-ko, Yamanashi, and become a "Chair Library", displaying a collection of approximately 600 chairs from all around the world.

So far, we've managed to take down all the ceilings, earth walls and the smaller materials. Taking apart the materials revealed amazing joineries and the works of carpenters long ago.

I'm really grateful to have this unique opportunity and learn alot from the process and other carpenters. I hope to capture the entire process of the project and our work, sharing it with you all here.

The first video of the process will be published soon (once I finish editing it).

Happy holidays and I hope you'll enjoy the videos!

In the meantime, for those interested I have pictures of the work and house on my Instagram: www.instagram.com/dylaniwakuni/
