Finally an article that helps you to answer back when someone asks ā€œWhy is everyone autistic these days?ā€

*****

As access to diagnostic services improves and knowledge about autism expands, the number of adults realising they're autistic will continue to grow as we course correct.

Oh and then there's also our increased visibility (IRL & URL) - it fosters awareness and acceptance but it also inadvertently fuels conspiracy theories.

Don't get me wrong, I love the drama but can't help but wonder if there would be so many conspiracies about the rise in adult autism if our visibility online hadn't soared in the last few years.

Introducing The Autism Visibility Paradox.

The new school year energy has got me so here we are, Iā€™m writing (& podcasting) again connecting the dots between random concepts, questioning a lot and oversharing a little. This is for those of us tired of the mid, surface-level autism awareness contentā€”the kind so generic it might as well have the ChatGPT logo on it. It's for anyone seeking genuine insight into autistic culture and ready to critically explore how it interacts with the world around us

Part of the neurodivergent experience is realising that your brain is different, figuring out what your needs are and how you can create a life that works for you but, the need for that individual pursuit comes from being part of a community, from being bound by a diagnosis to a group as diverse as the world and yet, it feels like the mainstream neurodiversity movement is okay with a neurodivergent individual's decisions being made in a vacuum.

Two years ago I published an article in Twos Mag and said that Choice Feminism looks scarily similar to how the neurodiversity movement is playing out

ā€œIā€™m not sure what's worse, being left behind or being expected to sit by and watch the groundswell of white advocates find their voices, access support and begin to thrive as they understand their brains better.ā€

Not much has changed since then, if anything itā€™s getting worse.

So thatā€™s where alryt.world comes in, itā€™s a place where we race is always part of the neurodiversity conversation, not in the pathetic ā€œ*this is worse for Black and Queer peopleā€ kinda way but in the very real, let's talk about our experiences, dig into why itā€™s worse, call out the bullshit in the wider neurodiversity movement and support each other through these universal experiences with practical advice kinda way.

Burnout: Could Creativity be the cure?

This week's article is written by Liv, a millennial from London with Ugandan-English roots. Liv's does it all, from makeup artistry to content creation and motivational speaking. Sheā€™s here to share her journey, talking about her experiences code switching and masking at work, and how creativity helped her to heal from the burnout it caused. Its an honour to have Liv's candid story of self-discovery and resilience be the first in the series.

Sorry I've not posted anything yet this year, Ive really being thinking about
1. What i want to make
2. Why i make content
3. How i can do it in a way thats good for us both, I dont want to burnout and I also don't think i want to strive to make a career out of this so that means i have more freedom in what and how i create but I dont want to make 'boring videos' and then come off as selfish....

its on my mind like 24/7 as soon and I have an idea I'll be back
Or if you have any suggestions or what i said sparks anything please, drop a comment

What does 'community' look like in 2024?

I've been searching for a neurodivergent community I feel comfortable in.

āœØ One that makes space for my Blackness
āœØ Is realistic about neuroinclusion
āœØ Is peer-led

Couldn't find one, so I've started one. Join me!

Applications are open now: docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSeVx3ub_v6NZBtm98ā€¦

What does it mean to grow up when milestones are inaccessible?

When I left uni and started to ā€œadultā€ I realised just how hard things were going to be for me because Iā€™m autistic. Until that point, I thought all the extra work I was doing was because I was black and a woman like, I was told several times every year ā€œYou have to work twice as hard tough half as muchā€ and yeah thatā€™s true but how much harder do I have to try when we add neurodivergence into that and why am I even trying at all.

Societally weā€™re going through a phase where adulthood looks different, by force. No one can move out of their parentā€™s and buy a house, everyones finding it hard to get into relationships, the job markets a mess blah blah blah. But intersectionality is missing from so many of these conversations, being autistic has an impact on how challenging it may be to attain and maintain a job, a home, relationships ect.

I first started thinking about autism and independence when I got obsessed with the concept of lifestyle design, think Tim Ferris four-hour work week and Matt Dā€™avella, James Clear Atomic Habits and now Huberman Lab, like that whole space of bio hacks and lifestyle optimization. At its best this content made me quit a 9-5 that was actually destroying my soul but it's worse this made me feel inadequate because I couldn't consistently stick to the protocols and no matter how hard I tried, I couldnā€™t unlock the avatar they created.

To be honest I wish I had someone around me at the time that could just say ā€œYeah no shit, youā€™re autistic hunā€ And not for it to be an excuse but, for it to be a reason as to why this isn't working and why I need to approach life differently to access the dream life Iā€™d been sold.
