Operation Bernhard was an operation carried out by Nazi Germany during World War II to counterfeit British pounds with the aim of destabilizing the economy of the United Kingdom. It was named in honor of the leader of the operation, SS officer Bernhard KrĂŒger.
The operation began in 1942 and was carried out at the Sachsenhausen concentration camp, where teams of Jewish prisoners and other prisoners of war were created to produce counterfeit bills in large quantities. It is estimated that around ÂŁ132 million in British pounds were counterfeited, although they were never widely used to avoid detection.
Operation Bernhard was one of the largest counterfeiting operations in history and had a significant impact on the British economy during the war. Although the operation was stopped in 1945, it is believed that some counterfeit bills continue to circulate today.
