I might have to convince Kyle to make more gem-inspired work because they’re honestly some of my favourites 💎 This one’s called Refinement — a copper plate etching with aquatint.

I especially love the close-up of the plate where you can really see the contrast between the etched lines, the untouched copper, and the aquatint. Always so satisfying to spot that kind of process detail. This was done when we were first starting to work with aquatint in the studio. I remember both of us being so nervous about the process and uncertain about how to judge the density of the acrylic aquatint on the plate. #etching #printmaker #art

We have been deep into etching lately. (currently editing a video about making registration jigs for multi-plate copper etching)

This print is an oldie but a goodie—Kyle made it back when we were still using Future Floor Wax as our hardground (yes, the floor polish 😅). We actually loved this process - it was cost effective, easy to make and easy to clean-up. It did have some downfalls (if you didn’t degrease the plate well the ground would flake off while you were drawing or rarely, but at times, during the etching process). Sadly, Pledge stopped making this product.

But, if you’ve seen our recent videos, you know we’ve switched to BIG ground, which has been awesome—it’s a bit tougher to remove, but so satisfying to work with.

At first, I was a little nervous to try another new material—especially after spending so much time figuring out the floor wax process when we moved away from traditional wax grounds. But we’re really committed to working with safer materials (so we can keep doing this for years to come). And, as is so often the case, the switch I was worried about turned out to be even better than what we were using before.
