Black Thanksgiving

For Black folks, Thanksgiving carries unique significance. Historically, it began as a church-centered celebration, with pastors delivering powerful sermons about the struggles and hopes of Black communities. For enslaved people, Thanksgiving was bittersweet—marked by hard labor for their masters’ feasts, but also a rare pause from daily hardships.

After emancipation, Thanksgiving became a time to celebrate newfound freedom, despite ongoing challenges like unemployment, segregation, and racial violence. It became more than a meal; it was about resilience and reinforcing communal bonds. Despite the harsh realities of their time.

Black Americans used Thanksgiving to celebrate, reflect, and unite in their shared struggles and triumphs.

Black Eyed Peas

Originating in West Africa around 3000 BC, black-eyed peas traveled to America in the 17th century with enslaved Africans, along with other cultural staples like okra and watermelon. Enslaved individuals planted these peas in the difficult soils of the American South. Black-eyed peas proved as resilient as the people who planted them, thriving under harsh conditions and providing essential nutrition to the enslaved. This is where it became known as "poor man's meat"

Black Collards

Introduced to Americans in the 17th century, collard greens thrived in the harsh winters of the South but were truly transformed by enslaved Africans. Collard were one of a few vegetables that enslaved Black folks were allowed to grow and harvest.

They turned this humble green, often seen as waste by their oppressors, into flavorful meals by simmering them with salt pork, ham hocks, or turkey necks to enhance the taste and texture. The labor-intensive process, often involving cleaning, chopping, and slow simmering, is a preparation ritual passed down through generations and entwines stories of both struggle and success.

This is especially true during New Year’s Day, Southern folklore suggests that pairing collards with black-eyed peas and pork can bring luck and prosperity, with collard greens said to represent paper money.

The Rice Coast

In the late 15th century, Portuguese explorers noted the flourishing rice cultivation in West Africa, a skill deeply rooted in local communities. Tragically, the transatlantic slave trade brought these expert rice cultivators to the Americas, where their knowledge transformed agriculture.

Their expertise, possibly with seeds hidden in their hair, cultivated what became known as Carolina Gold. By the 1700s, African skills were so valued that areas like Charleston saw a surge in Rice Coast Africans, reshaping the economy in the Lowcountry of South Carolina and Georgia.

Veterans Day

Black Americans have bravely served in every major U.S. conflict, hoping military service would be a path to equality. However, their dreams often met the harsh reality of white supremacy. After WWI, heroes like Sergeant Henry Johnson returned home only to face the violence of the Red Summer. Their courageous service made them targets of racial aggression, as white communities feared Black assertiveness.

In WWII, the Double V Campaign aimed for victories over fascism and racism. Some policies shifted, such as the desegregation of officer training, but discrimination persisted both in the military and at home. The G.I. Bill rarely extended equal benefits to Black veterans, and many endured racial violence, particularly in the South.

Harry Truman's 1948 executive order began the desegregation of the armed forces. The perseverance of Black veterans post-WWII helped ignite the Civil Rights Movement.

Their legacy highlights a relentless fight against injustice and unwavering patriotism.
