I thought age matters until...
I helped 3 clients 35+ yr old to land at MIT, CMU and Northwestern.

I thought circumstances matters until...
I saw average middle class students making six figure salaries in the US.

I thought pedigree matters until...
I interviewed founders hailing from Tier 3 colleges and building unicorn startups.

I thought money matters until...
I saw unhappy billionaires.

I thought success brings satisfaction until...
I had a daughter.

Nothing matters outside. Everything that matters is within you.
Cliche but true.

Not sure which admit/university to go for? ⬇️

In current economy and job market, I suggest you prioritize those programs that can help you find jobs most easily. You can do this by going for:

🔆Top rank universities typically attract good employers and solid career fairs, so if you have an option, choose a higher (top 20ish) ranked program

🔆Big city location have many employers around and they come to hire students on campus, so do prefer locations like NYC, Silicon Valley, Boston, Chicago, Austin, Dallas, LA, Seattle if you can

Second thing I would prioritize is cost of attendance. An imp note here: don’t just look for cheaper tuition fee but look for net cost of attendance i.e. what you have to pay = tuition fee - possible funding amount (TA/RA etc)

Other factors which may be important to some of you:

- Warmer climate (yes it matters a lot in keeping you happy and mentally healthy)
- Curriculum and faculty
- Cultural exposure (diverse student body etc)

Last but MOST important - there is NO perfect choice, you win some you lose some. This is why it’s important to introspect what matters the most to YOU.

Hope this helps!

🚀 Career Update 🚀 - by Harshit Kaushik

I am super excited to share with you all that I have been admitted to the Master of Information Management and Systems (MIMS) program at the University of California, Berkeley. In these two years, I plan to work on problems related to AI Fairness and Algorithmic Bias, while exploring tech policy and collaborating with the best minds in the field.

I would like to sincerely thank everyone I met at Mercer Mettl in these last two years. Working on Responsible AI initiatives here has been an incredible learning experience which shaped my approach to developing Trustworthy ML products. Thanks to Kaustubh Bansal, Vinay Khandelwal, and Shubham Bindal for being amazing mentors.

Also, this would not have been possible without the guidance of my research supervisors, Dr. Dilbag Singh at NYU Langone Health and Tarun Kumar, Ph.D. at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc). Collaborating with them on intriguing research problems sparked my interest early in this field.

In this application cycle, I also received offers from other reputed universities, including the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (CS), Northeastern University (CS), Arizona State University (CS), and Carnegie Mellon University (MISM). Thanks to Nistha Tripathi. She is truly an exceptional mentor, always bringing out the best in others.

As I am now in the Bay Area, I would love to connect with professionals contributing to this field. Let’s share ideas and collaborate to develop AI solutions with commitment to Fairness, Accountability and Transparency principles.

Also, lowkey, ready to take on those Berkeley hills and academic thrills!

Go Bears! 🐻💙

Every day I get DMs asking for scholarships in USA.

I did my MS in US (at UIUC) for free and paid for my MBA at NYU (1st year only after which I dropped out).

Both gave me tremendous leverage in my career.

Having seen both the sides (paid and fully funded education), I understand very well how financial aid works in the US.

It does NOT work like in UK. You don't have good external scholarships in US. If you are looking for fully funded admission, US is not the right place for you. 90% of the funding there happens AFTER receiving an admit.

And I understand that this does not work for many people. If you are also looking for full funding at the time of admission, there are other countries to consider - UK, Germany, other countries in EU including France, S Korea etc.

Good US universities have great funding but they dont give scholarships the way you think they do.

So, if you are still keen on US and want to find out how you can realistically get funding to study there, check out https://youtu.be/76IdG4I6eCs - YouTube video.

There, I discuss 5 mistakes to avoid if you want financial aid and scholarships in US.

No. of Indians studying in US at undergrad level in

2022: 27,545
2023: 31,954

Here are the colleges which have most number of international students on campus in USA:

NYU
CMU
University of Rochester
Boston University
Columbia
Emory University
University of Chicago
IIT Chicago (haha)
John Hokins University

In my days, only the very affluent families could afford a US education for their kids at undergrad level. Nowadays, more Indian families have the means to do so.

Further aggravated by the pressure of entrance exams and desire to skip the rote learning, many kids themselves are aspiring to study abroad (I am amazed at the number of high school students reaching out to us directly these days).

But it is a big decision because at that tender age of 17, not every kid can handle the big change of studying in a foreign land and culture.

So, how do you decide if your kid is ready/mature enough for it? And how do you support them no matter what?

This is why I discuss 'Is your child ready for Bachelors in USA' in today's YouTube video. I tell you signs which can give you confidence that your kid has come of age.

You MUST watch it if you are planning study abroad for your kid.

For a man who could move companies, industries and countries with a signature, he was moved by the ailments of common man and street dogs.

For a man who could climb the lists of the richest, he chose to spend his wealth on treating cancer patients for free.

For a man who could close 10x profits, he chose to pay salaries and health insurance to the employees he had to lay off.

Thank you Dear Ratan Tata ji for showing us that money can be made with integrity and what you do with that money is bigger than any success.

It is astounding that a man I and millions of other Indians never even met has left us in tears by passing away. You made us proud to be an Indian and hold Indian values.

There are business tycoons. There are kind humans. There are heroes whose stories I plan to tell my daughter to emulate.

Only you could be all of these.

Rest in peace, sir 😢
