John Gilliland's Pop Chronicles Interviews - Brian Jones: https://youtu.be/QUi2E57jlLM

Recorded at R.G. Jones Studio, Morden, Surrey, England on 6th February 1968.

Interesting and helpful to hear Brian himself say he played piano, organ and autoharp on Stones recordings. At 1:10 he basically tells us that he played the fast soprano saxophone line on Citadel.

Following the interview a brief extract of the Stones playing was recorded by Gilliland on his tape machine: https://youtu.be/CGeOqdT7RNU?si=q1y00...

Line up:
Brian Jones - electric piano or guitar
Mick Jagger - guitar
Keith Richards - guitar
Bill Wyman - bass guitar
Charlie Watts - drums
Ian Stewart - possibly electric piano

The Rolling Stones - Stray Cat Blues: https://youtu.be/1mcTNBBdiOE?si=SlIvD...

Recorded at Olympic Sound Studios, London, England on 17th March - 23rd May 1968. Vocals possibly overdubbed at Sunset Sound Studio, Los Angeles, USA on 7th - 21st July 1968.

Some sources mistakenly credit Brian with slide guitar on Stray Cat Blues. However, all guitars are by Keith, and none of the guitar parts feature the use of a slide.

Line up:
Brian Jones - Mellotron
Mick Jagger - vocals
Keith Richards - guitars
Bill Wyman or Keith Richards - bass guitar
Charlie Watts - drums
Nicky Hopkins - piano
Rocky Dzidzornu - congas

Stray Cat Blues - isolated: https://youtu.be/trSEfKqTwdo

Isolated line up:
Brian Jones - mellotron
Mick Jagger - vocals
Keith Richards - guitars
Nicky Hopkins - piano

Stray Cat Blues - mellotron demonstration: https://youtu.be/wknx6NZikY4

A demonstration/approximation showing the essentials of what Brian Jones played albeit without the chaos. Recorded to allow for Brian's mellotron idea to be heard without main backing. I played the guitar part by Keith too because it's ace and I wanted to. ๐Ÿ˜œ

The Rolling Stones - No Expectations & Still A Fool - featuring Brian Jones playing slide guitar. Recorded at Olympic Sound Studios, London, England. 18th - 19th May 1968.

Still A Fool: https://youtu.be/C9br-jvc6zg

No Expectations: https://youtu.be/0aNbZIOvrMI

3 separate sources, those being ABKCO, Geir Hรธrnes with his ace book 'The Curious Chronicles of Villa Nellcote' and an American model called Elizabeth Anderson allow us to know that at this session both Still A Fool and No Expectations were recorded.

A significant session as this is the last recordings we currently have of Brian playing slide guitar with The Rolling Stones at a studio recording session.

Of course this is not the last studio recordings we have featuring Brian, which is sometimes said, but fair, perhaps, to say they are the last significant studio recordings we have featuring him. Apt that it is recordings of him playing slide guitar, which is what he played when Mick and Keith first heard him play guitar back in 1962.

Creem magazine - July 1974 - Mick Jagger interview.

How much of a vacuum did Brian leave in the band?

"We weren't playing, that was the thing, but we were recording a lot of good material on our own, the four of us. Brian played on some of Beggars Banquet - not all of it. Let's say he was helpful. I don't exactly know how many tracks he played on, but that was his (last)* album. We did Let It Bleed without him. But Brian wasn't around towards the end. What we didn't like was that we wanted to play onstage and Brian wasn't in any condition to play. He couldn't play. He was far too messed up in his mind to play."

Surely that must have affected the morale of the Stones?

"It did, we felt like we had a wooden leg. We wanted to go out and play, but Brian couldn't. I don't think that he really wanted to and it was this that really pissed me off. He didn't have any desire to go onstage and play. Let's talk about something else."

*my insert.

...

There was and probably remains unresolved angst, sadness and guilt in relation to Brian...

However, within these angsty quotes there are often helpful, positives to take from them. In this instance it's Mick commenting on Brian's participation on Beggars Banquet. He doesn't remember specifics, but what he say's is supportive of the now reasonably well established or likely Brian contribution credits that have gradually become accepted.

Another interesting and helpful aspect of this interview is that he defines a difference between spring 1968 (Beggars Banquet) and spring 1969 (Let It Bleed) re Brian's participation. In this interview Mick acknowledges that there was a difference. In later interviews everyone talks as if they are one and the same.

The Rolling Stones - Street Fighting Man: https://youtu.be/-3CMuDkSxY8?si=IdkBk...

Recorded at Olympic Sound Studios, London, England & Sunset Sound Studios, Los Angeles, USA - 17th March - 25th July 1968.

Line up:
Brian Jones - sitar, tanpura & percussion/Moroccan drum
Mick Jagger - vocals & percussion
Keith Richards - acoustic guitar & bass guitar
Bill Wyman - percussion
Charlie Watts - trap kit & drums
Nicky Hopkins - piano
Dave Mason - percussion/Moroccan drum & shehnai

Street Fighting Man - (isolated right speaker + vocal reduction): https://youtu.be/V4QR9EplgOk

Isolated line up:
Brian Jones - sitar*
Mick Jagger - vocals
Keith Richards - acoustic guitar
Charlie Watts - trap kit
Dave Mason - shehnai

*Brian's sitar is buried deep within the distortion of the cassette recording. It is however audible at times. It enters the track at approximately 5 seconds in being strummed 1+2+3+4+ with one note fretted. It is also audible in the breaks after each chorus doubling a melodic line, for example at 0:45, 1:31, 2:20, 2:36.

Isolated line up:
Brian Jones - tanpura & percussion/Moroccan drum
Keith Richards - acoustic guitar
Charlie Watts - drums
Nicky Hopkins - piano
Dave Mason - percussion/Moroccan drum & shehnai

...

Street Fighting Man was initially recorded as a song titled 'Pay Your Dues' with alternate lyrics and electric violin soloing by Rick Grech: https://youtu.be/-4zi1kri8FE?si=Z2Ttg...

The vocals were re-recorded with new lyrics and released as a single in the USA. This pre Beggars Banquet single release features a unique mono mix and vocal performance by Mick: https://youtu.be/LM7YoEQdXko?si=1Wpas...

Pay Your Dues, the Street Fighting Man single and the album version all feature the same core backing track. From a Brian Jones pov, that means that we hear the exact same sitar and tanpura recordings on all 3 of these tracks. This is currently the only available recorded performance we have of Brian playing tanpura. The percussive attacking sound of the tanpura suggests that he used a plectrum rather than his fingers to pluck the strings.

For comparison, here is a tanpura being played in the traditional manner: https://youtu.be/rVeFX4O4zT0?si=8OUq8...

...

"The basic track of that was done on a mono cassette with very distorted overrecording, on a Phillips with no limiters. Brian is playing sitar, it twangs away. He's holding notes that wouldn't come through if you had a board, you wouldn't be able to fit it in. But on a cassette if you just move the people, it does. Cut in the studio and then put on a tape. Started putting percussion and bass on it. That was really an electronic track, up in the realms.' - Keith Richards

"Then Charlie added a bigger bass drum on one track, and I added another acoustic guitar to widen the sound. In fact, the only electric instrument on the entire recording is the bass. Bill wasn't around and things were moving fast, so I just recorded the bass line I had in my head. Everything happened so quickly. Dave Mason came in later to add a bass drum and a shehnai at the end of the song. Brian played sitar and tambura and Nicky Hopkins added the piano part." - Keith Richards

"The original Rolling Stones band was so incredible due in great part to Brian Jones. It was initially his band, after all. He was a visionary and creative. One of the last times I saw him was during the Beggars Banquet sessions; we were sitting in a circle on the floor. Keith Richards on my right with an acoustic guitar, Charlie Watts on my left with a snare drum in a briefcase. Opposite me was Brian. We were beating on large Morrocan drums. Laying down the basic track for Street Fighting Man. Itโ€™s one of the great memories I have in my life." - Dave Mason

BBC Radio 1 (Top Gear) interview - Brian Jones & Mick Jagger - 15th May 1968: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s6Ccd...

At 2 minutes, 11 seconds in:
Mick Jagger: "It's a sort of a electric country opus on which Brian plays a soprano saxophone very nicely. "
Brian Jones: "The funny thing is it sounds like one of those long Bach trumpet things. "

...

There are a few early takes available, without Brian, which are often mistakenly credited as being from 1967, but are from spring 1968. A note of interest is that Bill Wyman plays what would become his bass line on an electric piano.

"... even from Beggars Banquet, on which Brian appears on some tracks, in various forms, playing flutes on one track..." - Jimmy Miller. Source: https://youtu.be/4Q6tp2yM_rc

The "flutes" Jimmy mentions was Brian using the 'flute" setting on the MKII mellotron with added echo/reverb. Brian utilises both the sound and pitch control to create a unique and distinctive contribution.

...

Thanks to the inclusion of 14 'live' in studio takes on Midnight Beat - Satanic Sessions box set and the results of the above isolation we can deduce that the slide guitar played by Keith was recorded along with the piano, bass and drums as part of the main basic backing track takes. For the basic track session Mick sang a 'guide' vocal and played a 'guide' acoustic guitar during takes which was not kept for the official release. The mellotron by Brian and the acoustic guitar by Keith were both overdubs.
