As those of us in the USA celebrate the 4th of July, it feels fitting to reflect on the independence that young children are developing (see how I tied that together 😏!). Just as our nation celebrates its independence, toddlers and preschoolers are discovering their own abilities and asserting their independence in remarkable ways which isn't always an easy things for us as parents.
Here are some reminders about why we need to honor and respect their burgeoning independence:
➡️ Toddlers and preschoolers are naturally curious and are learning to do things on their own, from feeding themselves to dressing and undressing. When we do things for them, we steal away valuable learning opportunities.
➡️ This age group often tests limits to understand what is acceptable. It's a crucial part of their development and learning. Trust me, they aren't testing to drive us crazy. They are trying to form conclusions on the boundaries and limits that they experience in their world. They NEED to push those boundaries to determine for themselves with 100% certainty that they are going to get the same result every time. If they don't...you guessed it, the testing will continue. This is why consistency is key.
➡️ Successfully completing tasks on their own helps build their confidence and sense of self. When we step in and do things for them instead of letting them try, it sends a message that they are not capable which impacts their growing self-esteem.
So here are some tips to help manage this stage of your child's development:
➡️ Encourage exploration by creating a safe environment where your child can explore and try new things. Childproofing your home allows them to explore freely without constant restrictions.
➡️ Offer your child simple choices, like picking out their clothes or choosing between two snacks. This helps them feel empowered and learn decision-making skills.
➡️ Be patient. Developing patience as a parent can be challenging. Recognize that independence takes time and celebrate their efforts and achievements, even if tasks take longer or are messy.
Just as Independence Day marks a significant milestone for our country, each step your child takes toward independence is a milestone in their development. Embrace and celebrate these moments. They are growing, learning, and becoming their own little person. With your support and patience, they will thrive and become confident, independent individuals.
Wishing you and your family a happy and safe 4th of July filled with joy, learning, and growing independence! 🎇🎉

As a social worker and parent coach, Jill Urbane has been working with families for almost thirty years, the last twenty as a home visitor to families with young children. In that time, she has developed a comprehensive system that gives parents the tools needed to encourage their child's development and set a strong foundation for learning and success. Her focus is on brain development, motor and language development, sensory strategies, as well as developmentally appropriate discipline strategies that foster positive parent child relationships. Jill recognizes that parents are 1) busy and 2) get overwhelmed by all the information out there. She has done the hands on work, the research, attended the workshops, read the books and cross trained with a multidisciplinary team for twenty years. Now, she is sharing that knowledge with busy parents in four minute morsels. Don't want to miss anything? Sign up for her newsletter below and get tips sent right to your in box!
