On the off chance that any of you didn't know about this.......

The upcoming Dartmoor court case, set for October 8, 2024, will be a pivotal moment for wild camping enthusiasts. Landowner Alexander Darwall is challenging an earlier High Court decision that allowed wild camping on Dartmoor without landowner permission. The Supreme Court’s ruling will be final, potentially establishing or permanently banning the right to wild camp on Dartmoor. This case has sparked significant public interest and rallies, as many see it as a fight to preserve the tradition of wild camping and public access to natural spaces.

The potential consequences of the Dartmoor court case for wild camping are significant:

Legal Precedent: If the Supreme Court rules in favour of Alexander Darwall, it could set a precedent that restricts wild camping not only on Dartmoor but potentially influences other areas in the UK.

Access Rights: A ruling against wild camping could limit public access to natural spaces, impacting outdoor enthusiasts who value the freedom to camp in the wild.

Environmental Impact: Restricting wild camping might reduce the environmental footprint in certain areas, but it could also concentrate camping activities in fewer, more crowded locations.

Cultural and Recreational Impact: Wild camping is a cherished tradition for many, and a ban could diminish the cultural and recreational value of outdoor activities.

Arguments for Wild Camping (Proponents):

Tradition and Public Access: Proponents argue that wild camping on Dartmoor is a long-standing tradition that allows people to connect with nature and enjoy the outdoors freely.

Environmental Stewardship: Many believe that responsible wild camping promotes environmental awareness and stewardship, encouraging people to care for natural spaces.

Legal Rights: Supporters point to the Dartmoor Commons Act 1985, which they interpret as granting the right to wild camp on Dartmoor without needing landowner permission.

Arguments Against Wild Camping (Opponents):

Property Rights: Landowners like Alexander Darwall argue that wild camping infringes on their property rights and can lead to issues such as littering, fire hazards, and damage to the land.

Environmental Concerns: Opponents claim that unrestricted wild camping can harm the environment, including wildlife habitats and fragile ecosystems.

Legal Clarification: They seek a clear legal framework to manage and regulate camping activities, ensuring that land use is sustainable and respectful of property boundaries.

The Supreme Court’s decision will be crucial in determining the future of wild camping on Dartmoor and potentially other areas in the UK.

Me: Well I'm going to carry on whatever the outcome. In fact I may well look for any nice spots on the Blatchford Estate !

Just a follow up and details of the #savedartmoor campaign !

🥾Sunday 11th Dec, 11am - 12 noon, Princetown Memorial a peaceful attendance to show our appreciation of Dartmoor and our right to roam there, followed by a group hike 12.30 to 1530ish
🥾Monday 12th Dec, 12noon, rally outside the Courts of Justice in London with @right.2roam

Contact Beca ‪@muddy_bootlaces‬ for details

The plan to mass camp on the chaps land has been cancelled as this will obviously cause more problems than good as against the existing byelaws and would only give his case ammunition. But some are using opportunity to do some camping in their own groups on Sat/Sun.

Cheers.
