Are you troubled by your thoughts?
The more you stop identifying with burdensome thoughts, the more you begin to separate yourself from their hold over you.
You stop identifying with them by becoming aware of them. In the act of perceiving thoughts, you start to realize you are apart from the thoughts. You cannot be the objects that you perceive.
Thoughts comes and go, you remain - aware. â¤đ

- When you have really strong emotions come up, how do you look for the 'I'?
Take an example where somebody says something to you which is hurtful and you feel upset. What is it that is upset? Someone has said something to you. Youâve heard some words, and the words are heard by awareness. Youâre aware of the words. You hear them.
For instance, if someone were to say something like, âWhat a beautiful afternoon it isâ, that wouldnât upset you. Two minutes later, somebody says something which is hurtful or upsetting. Whatâs the difference?
- My story. Usually I would be like, âThey shouldnât have done thatâ.
But what is saying that? Because whatever it is that hears the words, âWhat a beautiful afternoonâ, those words are heard, and thereâs no response. Theyâre just heard. Then somebody says something which hurts you and there is a response: âIâm upset by thatâ. Now, what is it that is upset? Is whatever it is that heard the words upset? In other words, is awareness upset?
- No.
No. Awareness is like an empty space. Imagine awareness like the space of this room. Itâs just pure sensitivity. It canât be upset. Why not? Itâs because itâs empty. Thereâs no resistance in it. In order to be upset, something has to rise up and say, âNo, I donât like whatâs been saidâ. But in the absence of this something, the words just flow through. If someone were to throw a ball through this space it would just flow through. It wouldnât meet with any resistance.
So awareness is like that. It hears the words and they just pass through, like the words, âWhat a lovely afternoon it isâ. It just flows through and it doesnât leave a trace in awareness. It doesnât leave a trace in you. It doesnât scar you, doesnât hurt you.
Now, when you hear the hurtful words, something in you rises up and meets the words. The words are floating through you, and something rises up and clashes with the words and says, âI donât like thatâ. What âIâ is that, the âIâ that doesnât like these words? Itâs not the âIâ of awareness, because awareness is like an empty space. So what âIâ is it?
- The âIâ I think I am.
Itâs the âIâ you think you are, okay, but now go to that âIâ. Try to find that âIâ. What âIâ exactly is that? Where is it? Whatâs it made of? Youâre feeling on its behalf, you call it âIâ, so you must know it. Where is it? What is it? What do you find when you go towards it?
