My family took me out to a 2 Star Michelin Restaurant for my birthday yesterday (21 ā€œagainā€). Not a map or compass in sight šŸ˜Š

The food, ambience, setting, service, company, (and beer) was excellent, in fact everything was brilliant.
I never been to a Michelin star restaurant before - but have seen them on TV šŸ˜Š, it was everything I thought it would be (after watching MasterChef) - absolutely amazing.

Iā€™m in the Yorkshire Dales teaching on an advanced (NNAS Gold Level) navigation course. The last two days weā€™ve had glorious sunshine. But today ā€“ very heavy fog even low down, so higher up it looks like the participants will need some real advanced navigation skills.

Iā€™ve had a message from the leader of a scout group from Darwin in north Australia. Asking how to find the current declination when using old (30 years) maps. I thought others may be interested in the answer so Iā€™ve shown a copy of my reply below.

Hi #######

Thanks for your message and thanks for all the work that every scout leader around the world does in helping young people safely gain experience and the skills needed to go outdoors.

You asked how to check the local declination when using quite old maps.
There is a really simple method of doing this.

1 Find two points of your map which you can identify on the ground and go to one of those points. This could be a road or wall junction, a trig point, a bridge, junction of two rivers, etc. Basically anything which is the same now as it was when the map was printed.

2 Take a compass bearing from your location to the other point.

3 Take a bearing from the map your location to the other point.

4 Compare the two bearings. The difference is the current local declination.

I hope this helps.

Can you guess where I am from the photo ? I'll give you a hint - it's a VERY famous location.

Iā€™m here for a few days teaching on private lessons. The Peal District next week, then down to the Chiltern Hills.

Over this weekend I'm in The Shropshire Hills in central EnglandĀ  running an intermediate level navigation course.

The weather forecast yesterday wasn't good (basically strong wind and heavy rain) but it was, surprisingly, an ok day. A bit of light rain but only for a short time.

The forecast for today is equally dire, but looking out of the window it doesn't look that bad.Ā  Let's wait and see.
