During our last rattlesnake research night hike, we found that one of our research snakes was in shed (a natural process for all snakes). As you might notice, the eyes of this snake are blue and clouded over. Cale was worried that we wouldn't be able to find this snake at a later date because of the high likelihood that it would retreat underground to complete its shedding process and decided it was best to capture her now. This was necessary because the battery in her tracking device was due for a change.

Watch our newest long form video to learn more about our research and how you can attend a hike next season!

The Asiatic Toad (Bufo gargarizans) is a fascinating species from East Asia with a long history in regard to traditional Chinese medicine. Since antiquity, these amphibians have been prized for their specific cocktail of bufo toxins - which are believed to remedy the spread of cancerous cells. This medicine is refered to as "ChanSu" (蟾酥).

2005 clinical trials conducted in America discovered resulted in lung and liver cancer patients having tumors stabilized in 40% of patients.

Did you know that the Chinese Krait (B. multicinctus) was often referred to as the "two-step snake" by American soldiers during the Vietnam War? This was due to the belief that bite victims would only be able to take two steps before succumbing to this reptile's extremely potent venom.

This nickname is not completely unfounded, as a bite from this snake ranks amongst the most toxic reptiles on Earth. Only 0.09 mg is needed to be considered lethal in 50% of bite victims. When you consider that these snakes produce anywhere from 4.6 mg—19.4 mg per bite, you will realize just how deadly this animal is.

That means this snake's bite contains 51 to 215 lethal doses of venom!!!

Nothing excites us more that witnessing wild reptiles living in their natural habitat. Recently, our videographer Michael ventured to the misty bamboo forests in Hunan, China - all in search of the cryptic Chinese Bamboo Pit Viper. These snakes are a member of the prolific genus of Asian Palm Pit Vipers, Trimeresurus - a group of snakes with members spread throughout Asia.

To illustrate the variance in this genus, we compare the wild vipers we saw in China with an Indonesian Trimeresurus species that lives at PHS, the Sunda Island Palm Pit Viper.

Last Saturday was an exciting first for our team! After months of anticipation, Cale hosted our first ever Rattlesnake Research Night Hike and we are still reeling from what a successful night it was! In total, our clients saw over 10 snakes, with two research project snakes (with painted rattles), 6 wild Western Diamondbacks, and three long-nose snakes.

We were so happy to see how much our guests enjoyed the experience and we are looking forward to our next night hike! Make sure to sign up before we are sold out of spots for the 2024 season!

Last night, our team had our annual herping night north of the valley. During the trip, we spotted this beautiful Western Blacktail Rattlesnake (C. mollossus). Even though we spend all of our time around these animals at the sanctuary, we love taking the opportunity to view them in their natural habitat.

Check out this beautiful red speckled rattlesnake! You might remember the blue variety that we posted recently. We love the range of colors present in this one species of snake.

Amongst all the pit vipers in Arizona, Blue Speckled Rattlesnakes will always have a special space in our hearts. Blue is a rare color to find in the animal kingdom, and while there are other blue snakes there aren't other blue rattlesnakes.

We had to get some photos of this gorgeous male this week during a monsoon storm.
