Hey everyone, thank you so much for your feedback on the video. Many of you pointed out that economic hardship is a significant challenge our generation is facing, and I completely agreeāI wish I had highlighted this more, as itās something I think about a lot too.
My intention with this video was to explore the mental and emotional aspects of what Gen Z is going throughānot because I think āsniffing flowersā or meditating will fix everything, but because sometimes, starting with small, personal changes can help us build the resilience we need to tackle larger systemic issues.
At 20:11, I said:
āIām not saying that if you just stop thinking about your problems, theyāre going to magically disappearāfar from it. These issues that we face are real and actually do require our full attention. Still, I believe that our best chance of creating lasting, positive change in the world is to first create lasting, positive change within ourselves.ā
Iām not suggesting that we should ignore these issues or ājust meditate and youāll be fine.ā I know that demanding more from our leaders and pushing for a better world is crucial, and Iām with you on thatāpersonal change isnāt a substitute for collective action.
At the same time, I believe that focusing on what we can control (e.g., our screen time, our attitude, and how we show up in our relationships) can help us find the resolve and clarity we need to take on bigger battles.
Building ourselves up doesnāt mean we stop fighting for changeāit means we prepare ourselves to do it more effectively. We can care for our mental health while simultaneously pushing for a better world.
Itās been over a year since I first wrote this video, and honestly, my views have evolved since then. Looking back, I see that some of my takes on postmodernism, āI donāt dream of labor,ā and the American Dream were oversimplified. I also regret not presenting a more comprehensive view of Dr. Jean Twengeās research. I cut out a lot to keep the video engaging for the algo, but in doing so, I donāt think I did her argument justice. Thereās so much value in her work that I didnāt capture, so if youāre curious, I highly recommend her book āGenerations.ā
I really appreciate all of you for pointing these things out and helping me grow. If you have any ideas or suggestions on what youād like to see next, please shareāIām all ears. Thanks again for being a part of this journey! ā¤ļø
