Put up two versions of this performance from January 2020, one of the last shows I did before the pandemic. I provided footage to Guangdong TV for a special featuring various pupils of Jiang Kun, broadcast on March 13, 2021. Then I went back and re-edited a shorter version of the piece into a vertical format, incorporating some extra footage I had stored away, I consider this a work in progress, an early performance in which I was trying out new material on a live audience for the first time.

This is a piece I used to perform around 2000-2004, but always thought could use a bit more work. So as a pandemic project, I've polished it up and re-recorded in my home studio.
Like many comedies, this doesn't translate well. The set-up and the dialogue can be translated fairly easily, but at its core the joke is based on a double meaning that exists in Chinese, but not in English. I could do English captions and they would be fine most of the way through, but the kicker at the end just wouldn't make sense in English where the double meaning is lost in translation.
同意 [tóngyì] as an expression is "to agree, consent, approve", but when the two characters are interpreted literally we get 同 [tóng] “same” and 意 [yì] “meaning, thought, intention". In other words, when two people have the "same meaning" (or same thought, same intention) we say they are *in agreement*.
This "master calligrapher" in fact only knows how to write five characters, for the expressions "agree", "don't agree" and the three characters of his name Hu Buzi. Hu 胡 is a common surname, no double meaning here. Bu 不 indicates a negative, changing "agree" to "disagree". Zi 字 is a Chinese character (or Japanese Kanji). The double meaning comes in the interpretation of 同意 [tóngyì], as in 我同意 "I agree" or rearranged into the form 字同意不同 "the characters are the same but the meanings are different".
This is all wrapped up into an extremely awkward situation, which Hu Buzi navigates through by composing a silly but rather elegant poem using the only 5 characters he knows.
Humour relies on timing, and jokes are to be delivered, not explained This joke can be explained, but the explanation destroys the delivery, which ruins the joke.
But I do think the entire 7 minute piece is great material for a language lesson. Maybe I should do a follow-up video in English just for that purpose?

Put up another classical poem, this time a much more well-known piece, "On Returning Home". Several people have requested that I record this in the personalized messages I've been providing as a service during this pandemic year.
The English translation is off a bit, in that 儿童 as it's used here is to refer to "children" that the author knew as a child himself, now old folks who no longer recognize him as he returns to his hometown many decades later.

Posted two short videos this week, both more informative than entertaining. One is a quick introduction to this YouTube channel for people who haven't subscribed. The second (below) is a quick introduction to my solo comedy show "Dashan Live". More to follow, but I thought I should get these up first.

Found an old xiangsheng 相声 performance from 1990 on VHS tape, with the full ending that was later censored for TV broadcast. The kicker at the end is based on the term 流氓 [liúmáng], which was never a problem for radio but deemed too vulgar for TV. 流氓 [liúmáng] translates as "hoodlum" or "rogue" but implies loose sexual morals. Literally, I have a girl on each arm, so I'm a sleaze. That was too much for TV. Think George Carlin's "7 words you can't say on TV".
You'll notice the colour suddenly changes after 24:12. That's where I've inserted the original ending from the VHS tape that has faded over 29 years. The skit just isn't complete without "the kicker".
Like many traditional xiangsheng, this bit relies heavily on word play. It doesn't work at all in translation but I've provided Chinese captions for anyone studying the language. Enjoy!

最近上传了我个人资料库里的老节目，这是继 1989 年《名师高徒》之后我表演的第二个相声节目，其实是两段传统相声的结合：《金刚腿》加上《四管四辖》。
电视台播放时把节目结尾掐掉了，因为我最后提到了“流氓”二字，没通过审查。我这里上传的是完整版，看到24:12之后视频一下子变色，这是因为我从最原始的VHS素材带把结尾补了回去，但我个人收藏的 VHS 带质量不高，几十年后褪色了。
