Louisiana was supposedly named after the French king Louis XVI, but prior to that under Spanish control, the area was called "Luciana", which took on a different meaning...not associated with the king of France. The word "Luciana" as seen on the original Spanish maps, means "Light"....as in "walk in the light"...ande la luz

Historians like to over emphasize the fact that the French enslaved many West Africans, but before they were slaves, they served in huge numbers as free military men protecting French interest. Before French pirates established Saint Domingue in Hispaniola, they already had a 50 year relationship with West Africans, and had established an island settlement in West Africa named "Saint Louis".
