Back on 1st December 2023, I went to pray at West London Synagogue for Shabbat. It was the first time I had ever gone to Shul (Yiddish for Synagogue) for Shabbat.

Days prior I filled in a form online and answered questions about my previous residency, my current job and my faith. Put down Chrisitan, because I'm still considered Christian. I tell them that my great Grandpa Banks was Ashkenazi and I'm interested in following the Jewish faith.

I attended shul, rocked up early with a Kippah on my head, Magen David around my neck and Torah and passport in my hands. The security asked for my name and ID and welcomed me in.

It was a lovely time and afterwards, I went to heckle Kylie fans outside the Royal Albert Hall.

2 weeks later, I go back to the same shul, repeat the same process but I'm told by security. Sorry, it's a members-only thing tonight. the same security that welcomed me 2 weeks ago

Tonight I go to the same Synagogue only to be lied to and told that Visitors will not be allowed for the next 6 months or so. Even though I had emailed the shul and asked if I was allowed to attend

This is sad that Synagogues can be welcoming for Gentiles or people with Jewish ancestry to pray. But at the flick of a wrist, they want to close the door and tell me, wannabe Jew to bugger off.

Your website tells me to attend several Shabbat before I ask the Rabbi for an interview for conversion. If you're going to close the door on us, please at least have someone with the brain to write that on a website.

Yes, you can tell me to watch the service online. But that should only be reserved for people who can't make it into Westminster! I go from East London to West London because there are no fancy shuls where I live.

Ask a million questions and I'll give you a million answers.

I had a joyous time in Morocco shuls paying Muslim gatekeepers a few dirhams to go inside and do my morning and afternoon prayers.
