Evangelist Jimmy Swaggart experienced both moments of glory and moments of humiliation in his ministry. At one point, the enemy targeted this anointed man of God, causing a public scandal when he was entangled in an affair with a young woman. As a result, his community suspended him, and many of those close to him branded him a "fake pastor." Over 5,000 of his church members abandoned him, leaving him isolated and forsaken. The media relentlessly focused on the scandal, condemning him with harsh judgment. Even fellow ministers used his downfall as a focal point for their sermons, turning his pain into a cautionary tale.
But there came a moment when Evangelist Billy Graham, often seen as a rival and potential replacement, was asked about the situation. Many speculated that he would feel vindicated, believing he could now attract Jimmy Swaggart’s followers to his own ministry. However, when journalists questioned him about the scandal, Billy Graham's response stunned them: “If it happened to Evangelist Jimmy Swaggart, it could happen to me. This holy man of God won thousands of souls for Christ. He is already wounded; let us not finish him, but let us heal and lift up our brother.”
Dear Christian pastors, brothers, and sisters, let us remember to never rejoice when the enemy attacks another’s ministry. Let us not delight in seeing someone’s marriage or reputation destroyed by the forces of darkness. Rather, we are called to be our brother’s keeper, to offer healing and support when one of us falls. We must lift up, not tear down, and stand in the gap for one another in love and grace.
"Brethren, if a man be overtaken in a fault, ye which are spiritual, restore such an one in the spirit of meekness; considering thyself, lest thou also be tempted."
