Farmed animals like cows, pigs, chickens, fish and many more receive the most severe, widespread, violent treatment by humans.
Farmed animals are also by far the most neglected, with farmed animal rights and welfare groups receiving the lowest charity donations and funding of any cause globally (itâs estimated at less than 1% of total charitable donations go to helping farmed animals).
You may not currently be vegan, or eat many plant based meals, but I would ask you to consider making more animal friendly choices as a priority.
Please help the most neglected, abused animals on earth. Refuse to fund the businesses that hurt them. Encourage others to do the same. Thank you.

Many vegans (including myself in the past) argue that humans arenât top of the food chain, normally in response to someone saying thatâs why they eat animals.
But you can be vegan while believing humans are top of the food chain, it doesnât have to be one or the other.
Just like a strongman who wins a competition to become the strongest man in the world doesnât go around using his strength to beat up weaker people, we can acknowledge our species sits at the top of the food chain and leave animals off our plates.
We can dominate animals, but that doesnât mean we should. We can use our strength for good.
We can get our nutrition from plants and non-animal based sources. I believe we should do that, and try to make the world a better place for animals.

Very inspirational! Thank you for sending me messages like these, I hope this person's story inspires you to speak up for animals.

Whenever I post about animals and veganism, thereâs almost always someone who asks, âWhat about all the animals you kill for your vegan food?â
This concern is understandable and itâs true that crop farming can involve practices like using pesticides and other violent methods to protect crops.
Letâs take a closer look at the scale of impact:
Plant food production for humans:
- Growing and harvesting crops for 8 billion humans
Meat, dairy and egg production:
- Growing and harvesting crops (including grass) to feed over 80 billion land animals each year in the beef, chicken, pork, dairy, and egg industries.
- Growing and harvesting crops to feed over 120 billion fish each year in the aquaculture industry.
- Killing approximately 1-3 trillion animals each year, including both farmed and wild-caught fish.
When we compare these numbers, itâs clear that the meat, dairy, and egg industries are responsible for far more animal deaths.
As vegans, we are concerned about the impact of crop farming on animals, and we recognise that itâs difficult to grow food without some harm. But there are farming practices that can significantly reduce this impact.
On the other hand, when it comes to producing meat, dairy, eggs, and other animal products, harming animals is an inherent part of the process.
Please consider making more animal friendly choices.

Some people get incredibly offended when animal abuse in the meat, dairy and egg industries is compared to human issues.
They list the different human horrors going on in the world and say âthese are much worse because what we do to animals is just naturalâ
They say âwe kill and eat animals, itâs just the way it isâ
Most of us empathise with people more than animals and thatâs fine, I see why they get offended.
But the problem is just like we have been killing and eating animals for thousands of years, we have also been oppressing and killing each other for thousands of years.
If weâre saying itâs okay to do horrible things to animals because
âitâs just the way it isâ
That would make it okay to do horrible things to humans too because thatâs also
âjust the way it isâ
Thankfully, most people donât want that.
Most people who care about animals also care about humans, if you care about changing the world for humans, please donât make the world hell for animals. Consider making more animal friendly choices today.

Something I often hear people say is they eat meat because god placed animals on earth to serve as nourishment for humans.
Most mass religions and their holy books discuss animals in this way, so it makes sense.
Despite believing god put animals here for our nourishment, many people instead choose to befriend and protect animals.
Dogs and cats are mostly seen as companions, not nourishment. And other animals that are traditionally seen as nourishment such as pigs are also taken in as companions by many around the world.
Many people would fight to defend their animal companion, and others will go out of their way to rescue animals whenever they find them in need.
We get to decide how we treat animals and what role they play in our society.
We could continue to act violently towards them because our books say itâs okay, or instead we could follow a more peaceful path, and leave them off our plates.
If your religion is based on peace, I would hope you recognise these poor animals are defenceless to your violence.
I would hope you choose the peaceful option, and leave them off your plate. Please consider making animal friendly changes in your life today.

One thing people say about animals is: âTheyâre not human, so we can use and kill themâ
We see our own species as more important I get that, but I donât think thatâs the real reason people say this.
For example, if chickens were suddenly able to speak English and beg for their lives, how many people would vote to give them rights? How many would fight to end the chicken meat and egg industries? I think most people would.
I think the real reason people eat animals is because itâs easy to ignore their suffering. Animals canât communicate in our language, and that makes it easy to pretend theyâre mindless machines and their lives are meaningless.
I donât blame people for doing this. Look at the world for animals, look at the horrors of animal farming. If we really see animals and acknowledge their suffering, we see a living hell. Most people donât want to believe that, and I get why.
But ignoring it doesnât make it any less real.
Please consider making animal friendly changes in your life today, and remove your participation from this horror.
