"He rode into Fort Stockton on the wings of the Blizzard of ‘21. Used the backroads into town, all of them black with ice.
They called him The Suburban Stranger.
The paint may have been dark shades of GM and Toyota, but the fins were pure fifties Chrysler. The ‘X’ of Exner marked the spot. The figure behind the wheel was more of a shadow than a man, a Power Master of Performance on the prowl.
The wolves that had howled through the night fell silent as he passed, a nod of respect to the mystery man making his way towards Main Street. Once in town, the hooded high beams from the quad headlights lit the way to a destination that had been determined as far back as ‘59.
The neon porker atop the Piggy Wiggly flickered as he drove by, a disturbance in the force that could never be explained.
As the wagon pulled into the parking lot of the Rusty Hammer Hardware Store, the Slant-Six sent a surge of power to the spinning rear wheels like the devil demands duty from his demons, leaving rubber donuts on the asphalt that spelled out “666”. The locals locked their doors and closed their curtains, but couldn’t help but peer out at the wicked wagon waging war on their unsuspecting berg.
And then, before the ice ever melted, The Suburban Stranger was gone. The Plymouth drove off into the fog like the serpent that slithered out of the Garden of Eden. And just like the Garden, Fort Stockton would never be the same.
Denizens slowly emerged from their self imposed imprisonment, seeking the warmth of the sun and the comfort from its light. Each held a sense of relief. Only the librarian from Our Lady of Immeasurable Concern had a smile on her face. It seems the exhaust system of the Suburban wagon is not the only thing that had been Cherry Bombed.
