I used to daydream a lot as a teenager about operating a mining loader — the WA1200 was the one I always imagined running. What about you?

Making content in the machinery and mining world often takes an absurd amount of begging, and I try not to sell my soul too often for a shot at it. So yeah, opportunities are rare. But when they happen, they’re the real deal.

This week, a federal coal lease auction in Montana’s Powder River Basin ran into trouble. The 1,262-acre lease, estimated to contain 167.5 million tons of coal, received only one bid - from the Navajo Transitional Energy Company - of just $186,000. The Bureau of Land Management rejected the offer for failing to meet fair market value. This contrasts sharply with past sales, such as a 2012 auction that brought in $793 million for 721 million tons.

Following the Montana setback, a large coal lease sale in Wyoming was postponed. The low bid reflects declining coal demand as utilities shift toward natural gas and renewables. Despite political efforts to roll back restrictions and boost coal production, the industry faces ongoing challenges from low domestic demand, competition from alternative energy, and limited export opportunities.

The Caterpillar 793C isn't just a mining truck. It's a legendary mining truck that greatly contributed to build Caterpillar's reputation as an undisputed leader in mining haulage solutions. Absolute classic!

While the Liebherr R 9800 is without a doubt one of the best (if not the best) 800-ton excavators in the world, the machine usually comes with a backhoe configuration. Very few units have been delivered as shovels so far.

In early September 2025, a massive mud rush from the old Grasberg open pit flooded into the Grasberg Block Cave underground mine in Papua, Indonesia. The sudden inrush buried several working areas and trapped seven workers underground.

Despite extensive rescue efforts, all seven miners were later found dead, with the final five bodies recovered in early October. The disaster forced Freeport Indonesia to halt operations and declare force majeure, cutting off one of the world’s largest sources of copper and gold.

The incident is now under investigation, and analysts expect a major production shortfall through 2026, with global copper markets tightening as a result. Freeport has begun safety assessments but says full recovery may take until 2027.

A Hitachi EX3600-6 hydraulic excavator has reached 100,000 operating hours at the Kumtor Gold Mine in Kyrgyzstan, one of the world’s highest-altitude mining sites. The machine, originally delivered in 2012, has worked continuously for over a decade in extreme conditions at over 4,000 meters elevation, with temperatures plunging to -40 °C.

A ceremony marking the achievement brought together more than 70 people from Kumtor Gold, Hitachi Construction Machinery, and Eurasian Machinery LLP, Hitachi’s Central Asia dealer. The event celebrated not only the excavator’s durability but also the long-standing partnership between the companies.

Kumtor operates five EX3600-6 units, and the machine reaching the milestone was the first ever delivered to the site. Throughout its service life, Eurasian Machinery has maintained a permanent presence at the mine, providing technical and parts support, while Kumtor developed in-house maintenance backed by Hitachi experts - a collaboration key to its longevity.

Hitachi emphasized its commitment to supporting Central Asia’s resource-rich mining sector, where Kyrgyzstan alone hosts over 40 large gold deposits. The company, headquartered in Tokyo, employs about 26,000 people worldwide and reported $9 billion USD in revenue for fiscal 2024, with roughly 84% generated overseas.
