I don't usually do this, but I suspect many of you will start to see videos about the new AWOL Thunderbeat wireless surround sound system (pictured below) for $2999.99 USD. I just wrapped up my initial testing of the system, and its performance is so poor that I will not be reviewing it. This system is not a Sony Theatre Quad competitor. I would seriously question any claims or assertions that say it is.
The dual subwoofer system distorts and bottoms out around 40Hz and at volumes as low as 70dB in the room. Deadpool Wolverine's fight in the Void at moderate volumes was an absolute mess, resulting in what can only be described as flatulence-like sound coming from both subwoofer cabinets—cabinets that are rife with resonance and port noise, too.
The system lacks adjustability beyond tone controls and surround (as in more surround, less surround). The surround control sounds like a hall DSP sound effect or all-channel-stereo sound setting, even when fed a Dolby Surround or Atmos signal. Dialog on the screen can be heard in front and behind you even when the system plays back a Dolby signal. Speaking of dialog, the system falls in and out of sync quickly, too.
Aside from the performance woes, this system's construction, overall build, and materials are beyond poor and nowhere near in line with its three thousand dollar asking price. I cannot recommend this system, and I urge anyone who watches our channel or who is reading this to shop elsewhere. The Sony Theatre Quad with the SW5/SW3 subwoofer is better (bit.ly/3Wqie1w ). Likewise, Sonos' Ultimate Surround System (bit.ly/4eYaWc7) or Samsung's Q990D (bit.ly/3X4W84O ) are both better, and cheaper than the AWOL Thunderbeat.
