O LORD, if you heal me, I will be truly healed; if you save me, I will be truly saved. My praises are for you alone!

Today, August 13th, is the optional memorial of Saints Pontian, Pope, and Hippolytus, Priest, Martyrs. While there isn't a specific set of Bible verses assigned to their feast day, readings for the day often include passages from 1 Peter 4:12-19 and Psalm 124. These readings focus on themes of suffering for Christ, rejoicing in persecution, and the importance of remaining faithful to God's will.
Readings for the Optional Memorial of Saints Pontian and Hippolytus:
1 Peter 4:12-19:
This passage speaks about rejoicing in suffering for Christ, as it is a participation in His passion. It also emphasizes that one should not suffer as a wrongdoer but as a Christian, glorifying God through their suffering.
Psalm 124:
This psalm is a song of thanksgiving for deliverance from enemies. It reminds us that God is our refuge and strength, and that without His help, we would be overwhelmed by adversity.
Other related themes and passages:
Matthew 5:10-12:
"Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness' sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake. Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you." This verse echoes the theme of rejoicing in persecution that is found in the reading from 1 Peter.
Revelation 2:10:
"Fear none of those things which thou shalt suffer: behold, the devil shall cast some of you into prison, that ye may be tried; and ye shall have tribulation ten days: be thou faithful unto death, and I will give thee a crown of life." This verse speaks of faithfulness unto death, which is relevant to the martyrdom of Saints Pontian and Hippolytus.
The lives and martyrdom of Saints Pontian and Hippolytus serve as examples of Christian fortitude and faithfulness in the face of persecution, and the readings assigned for their feast day encourage believers to find joy in suffering for Christ and to remain steadfast in their faith. Amen.

John 20:24-29 describes the encounter of the disciple Thomas with the resurrected Jesus. Thomas, initially absent when Jesus first appeared to the other disciples, expresses doubt and says he will not believe unless he sees and touches the marks of the crucifixion. A week later, Jesus appears again, this time with Thomas present, and invites him to examine the wounds. Thomas then declares his belief, calling Jesus "My Lord and my God!". Jesus responds by highlighting the blessing of believing without seeing.
