This is an 8th grade graduation exam for Bullitt County, Kentucky, from 1912. They weren't taught Algebra back then. Though #8 in Arithmetic involves the Pythagorean formula to solve, aĀ²+bĀ²=cĀ². Education was based more on life skills to survive everyday life.

Happy Independence Day!

Independence Day, in the United States, the annual celebration of nationhood. It commemorates the passage of the Declaration of Independence by the Continental Congress on July 4, 1776.

The Congress had voted in favor of independence from Great Britain on July 2 but did not actually complete the process of revising the Declaration of Independence, originally drafted by Thomas Jefferson in consultation with fellow committee members John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, Roger Sherman, and William Livingston, until two days later.

Named one of the best illusions of 2014 by Scientific American, this short video by Arthur G. Shapiro and Alex Rose-Henig is all about perspective.
Each ball is actually traveling in a straight line.

Article about the math:
"...Thatā€™s how this illusion works. By mimicking this trigonometric motion, your eyes and brain are fooled into thinking the dots are acting together, portraying the rim of a circle. But they arenā€™t; their motions are related but independent of one another (whatā€™s called ā€œparametricā€ in mathematics).''

Each year, June 14 marks Flag Day, but many Americans aren't aware of the meaning or significance behind the annual observation.

Here's what to know about the day, which for 2024 year falls on Friday.

According to the United Statesā€™ Department of Veterans Affairs, the observance celebrates the anniversary of June 14, 1777, when the Continental Congress approved the design of a flag for the United States, which at the time featured 13 stars and 13 stripes, representing the 13 colonies.

ā€œResolved, that the flag of the United States be 13 stripes, alternate red and white; that the union be 13 stars, white in a blue field representing a new constellation,ā€ the resolution read.

Psychologist LĆ”szlĆ³ PolgĆ”r theorized that any child could become a genius in a chosen field with early training.
As an experiment, he trained his daughters in chess from age 4.
All three went on to become chess prodigies, and the youngest, Judit, is considered the best female player in history.
His mantra was, "A genius is not born. He/she is educated and trained."

Today, Memorial Day, may we remember the great sacrifice made by those who have given their lives in service to our country. May we never forget the price they paid, and may we always strive to honor their memory by living in a way that is worthy of their sacrifice. All gave some. Some gave all.
