Marcos Orders Lifestyle Checks Amid Flood-Control Probe

Manila, August 27, 2025 β€” President Ferdinand β€œBongbong” Marcos Jr. has ordered lifestyle checks on all government officials, following reports of alleged anomalies in flood-control projects.

The directive, announced by Press Officer Undersecretary Claire Castro, is part of a wider anti-corruption effort that will begin with officials from the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH). Castro noted that the Office of the Ombudsman, the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR), and other agencies are empowered to initiate lifestyle checks and audits to determine if public officials are living beyond their means.

β€œThis is about accountability, regardless of rank,” Castro said, adding that President Marcos wants to ensure that infrastructure funds are being spent transparently.

The announcement comes after Baguio City Mayor Benjamin Magalong submitted documents to the Palace, alleging irregularities in flood-control projects. The government is now reviewing those submissions in conjunction with the DPWH audit.

Why it matters: Billions of pesos are allocated annually for flood-control infrastructure. With growing public frustration over corruption, the lifestyle checks are intended to restore public trust and tighten oversight of public works spending.

Ron Turcotte: A True Canadian Icon Who Rode Into History

Ron Turcotte, the Canadian jockey who became a legend in 1973 by riding Secretariat to Triple Crown glory, has passed away, leaving behind a legacy that transcends the racetrack.

Born in Drummond, New Brunswick, Turcotte rose from humble beginnings to international acclaim, becoming one of the most celebrated jockeys in horse racing history. His name is forever linked with Secretariat’s breathtaking run at the Kentucky Derby, Preakness, and Belmont Stakes, a feat still regarded as one of the greatest achievements in sports.

But Turcotte’s greatness went far beyond racing triumphs. Known for his kindness, humility, and advocacy, he became a voice for jockey safety and for people living with disabilities after a riding accident left him paralyzed in 1978. He transformed personal tragedy into a mission of service, inspiring countless Canadians and racing fans worldwide.

Ron Turcotte’s story is one of resilience, compassion, and national pride. While his historic rides will forever be etched in racing lore, it is his humanity off the track that cements his place as a true Canadian icon.

Our hearts are with his family as Ron rides on in heaven.

Protect Our Brave Mayors!

In the coming days, brave mayors who dared to stand up to congressional syndicates and contractors may face retaliation. These leaders chose honesty over compromise, service over corruption, and accountability over silence.

However, they are now being targeted. Their courage threatens those who profit from manipulation, collusion, and shady deals. And so, the syndicate wants revenge.

We cannot let that happen. Protecting our brave mayors means safeguarding the future of honest governance. If they are punished for their integrity, the lesson to others will be simple: corruption wins, and courage is crushed.

Let us unite, raise our voices, and show support. The fight against corruption is not theirs aloneβ€”it is a fight for every Filipino who dreams of a fair and honest government.

Protect brave mayors. Defend good governance. Stand for accountability.

Poilievre Unveils Plan to Combat Extortion and Violent Crime

Surrey, B.C. – August 20, 2025

Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre announced a sweeping new strategy on Tuesday aimed at cracking down on extortion, shootings, and organized crimeβ€”issues he says are surging under Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s Liberal government.

Speaking in Surrey, Poilievre pointed to alarming national crime statistics: violent crime has risen 54%, sexual assaults are up 75%, and extortion has skyrocketed by 330% since the Liberals came to power.

Extortion on the Rise

Police across the country have warned of escalating threats and attacks against small business owners, particularly in Brampton, Surrey, Vancouver, and Calgary. Investigations have revealed criminal groups targeting immigrant entrepreneurs with threats, shootings, and firebombings.

β€œExtortion has exploded into one of Canada’s fastest-growing crimes,” Poilievre said. β€œFamilies are being shot at, businesses are firebombed, and Canadians are living in fear. This Liberal government dismantled tough laws, gutted jail sentences, and let gangs and extortionists rule our streets.”

Conservative Action Plan

Poilievre outlined a three-part Conservative plan to β€œend extortion and restore safe streets”:

Ban the Bishnoi Gang: List the Lawrence Bishnoi gang as a terrorist entity, giving police expanded powers to dismantle the network.

Stop Extortion: Reinstate mandatory minimum sentences for extortionβ€”three years for all cases, four years if a firearm is used, and five years when tied to organized crime. Arson would also be treated as an aggravating factor.

Jail, Not Bail: Repeal Liberal legislation C-5 and C-75, which Poilievre argues allow repeat violent offenders to return to the streets too quickly.

Political Battle Over Justice Laws

Conservatives have long advocated tougher penalties for extortion. In 2023, Deputy Leader Tim Uppal introduced Bill C-381, the Protection Against Extortion Act, which proposed stricter minimums and harsher sentencing for arson tied to intimidation. The bill was voted down by the Liberals.

Poilievre blamed the government’s β€œcatch-and-release” approach for emboldening criminals. β€œThe cause of this crime wave is clear: a government that sides with criminals instead of communities,” he said.

Looking Ahead

The announcement comes amid rising political pressure on Ottawa to address gang violence and extortion in urban centres. Law enforcement agencies have publicly warned that intimidation campaigns are expanding across Canada’s immigrant-heavy business corridors.

Poilievre urged the government to adopt his party’s plan, saying: β€œTogether, we can build a Canada that is safe, strong, secure, and self-reliant.”
